The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Discussion | Abstract 50’s Masters: Lives of the Artists

Abstract expressionism uses gesture and was an important development in abstract art (Action painting). Most of the artists began traditionally using grids and sketches, as they were taught. They went on to their individual development where the act and thought was important rather than the space that was there. The artists are considered mainly 2nd generation abstract expressionists. They were lucky to have the guidance of the stars of the first generation. Some of our artists went to the Art Students League and others took classes with the master artists. Many of them belonged to “the Club” and led to the organizing of the Ninth Street show in 1951 which unified the downtown artists and connected them to the public. The annual exhibits continued uptown at the Stable Gallery from 1951-1957.

Discussion | Character Building: Authors in Discussion

We carry some characters from books around with us like they’re trusted friends. We feel as close to them as we would to flesh and blood human beings we’ve known, loved, or loathed. We have strong feelings about them, we trust or distrust them, they make us laugh and cry. They’re as living and breathing as the reader. What’s the secret to making characters come to life, inhabit life-like bodies and feel life-changing emotions? What’s the magic that goes into making the description of a person in words spring to three-dimensional life? Join award-winning guests from Europe, Szczepan Twardoch, Asle Skredderberget, and Tommy Wieringa, as well as New York Times bestseller Elizabeth Flock (pictured), as they describe how they breathe life into their unforgettable characters. Moderated by writer, translator, and co-founder of New Vessel Press, Ross Ufberg.

Discussion | What is an Open Campus? Beyond the Ivory Tower

We live in an age of near constant disruption. Innovations in various industries push the creative envelope and advance the social good by offering radically new ways of approaching accepted industry practices. But can such disruption happen within the "ivory tower"? Or does one need to look beyond the traditional campus to find new ways of reaching and best serving today's new and wider audiences? What can traditional education providers learn from non-accredited academic institutions to help reimagine the learning landscape? Join thinkers at the vanguard of discourse - and practice - of education’s rapidly shifting frontier. Panelists will explore innovations in learning modalities, discuss advances in education access, and share insights. Classical Music | Johann Sebastian Bach's B Minor Mass

Performed by the Barnard-Columbia Chorus, the B Minor Mass is the only complete setting of the Latin Ordinary of the Mass composed by Bach. The first two sections were composed in 1733, while the remainder of the text was set to music in 1745. It is thought that Bach was interested in a post in Dresden, where the court was Roman Catholic. The piece was never heard in its entirety during Bach's lifetime, but today it is recognized as one of the great masterpieces of Western European art music.
