It is here, as much as anywhere, where American history started. It's where the first US Congress assembled and produced the Bill of Rights and where President George Washington took his first oath of office. It's here where the world's most important stock exchange and one of the most famous bridges stand. And it is here where an unspeakable tragedy took place and where a rebirth is underway. In the late nineteenth century, as a consequence of imperial conquest and a mobility revolution, Russia became a crossroads of the hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. The first book in any language on the hajj under tsarist and Soviet rule, Russian Hajj tells the story of how tsarist officials struggled to control and co-opt Russia's mass hajj traffic, seeing it not only as a liability, but also an opportunity.

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

For Italian immigrants and their descendants, needlework represents a marker of identity, a cultural touchstone as powerful as pasta and Neapolitan music. The lives of these Italian women are woven into the artifacts of memory and imagination: embroidering, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Embroidered Stories is an exciting anthology including academic essays and creative works from Argentina, Australia, Canada, and the United States. The entire collection explores multiple interpretations of the relationships between needlework and immigration from a transnational perspective during the period of the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. The book's editors and a number of the contributors will participate in this presentation. A book signing will follow the presentation.

What is it like to travel to Berlin today, particularly as a Jew, and bring with you the baggage of history? And what happens when an American Jew, raised by a secular family, falls in love with Berlin not in spite of his being a Jew but because of it? The answer is Berlin for Jews: A Twenty-First-Century Companion. Part history and part travel companion, Leonard Barkan’s personal love letter to the city shows how its long Jewish heritage, despite the atrocities of the Nazi era, has left an inspiring imprint on the vibrant metropolis of today.

Performance is a central component of every student's education at The School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the Ensemble Showcases are where faculty-led student groups showcase their talent and creativity.Countless jazz musicians have found inspiration in the many different approaches to musical improvisation practiced throughout the world. In this Cross Cultural Improv Ensemble, students will examine some of these approaches, and creatively explore ways to apply new systems and techniques into their own improvisation styles. Our topics will include North and South Indian classical music, Arab maqām, song dueling, dance/drum dialogues, the Persian radif, and simulated improvisation. We will also consider the history of the concept of “improvisation,” and how it relates to “composition.”

The mundane task of keeping local law and order suddenly takes on national significance in the face of Russia’s grab of Crimea—it has a real prospect of becoming the next target of aggression.
