Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Start times: 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm

Film | Colette and Justin (2022): Personal History in Postcolonial Congo

Alain Kassanda's debut film begins as a self-examination. How well does he know his grandparents? What does he know about his native Congo, which was partly imposed on his identity by colonizer Belgium? And what does he know about himself with that? He travels through time and his personal family history - in which he also beautifully brings the history of postcolonial Congo to life. He lets his grandparents look back on their lives, from their youth and first meeting to a complex political period. The Congo's first independent years pass by as a layered history, in which good and evil intertwine and Justin was assigned an important role. Director: Alain Kassanda 89 min. In Lingala and French with English subtitles Followed by a Q&A with the director

Opening Reception | James Razko: Casting Shadows

A solo exhibition featuring the artist's latest series of paintings titled Monomyth as well as works from his acclaimed Tiles series. Razko invites a viewer to explore the blurred boundaries between reality and imagination through what the artist refers to as a "hyper-illusion." This hyper-illusionism is expertly employed in his series Monomyth, where mythologically rich figures initially appear to be crafted from layers of fabric. Upon closer examination, these figures reveal themselves as paint. This manipulation of perceived space is painted over intricate patterns, which are shaped by being bound and then submerged in water and paint. This transformative process gives rise to a surface where chaos and intention coexist. For Razko, tie-dye serves not only as a symbol of counterculture and resistance against technological uniformity but also as a representation of humanity's journey through time.

Play | Bakkhai: Euripides' Most Controversial Play

Using Anne Carson's translation of Euripides' most subversive - and controversial - play, Bakkhai is about conflicts and the circle of death and rebirth. Dionysus's world of instincts and senses clashes disastrously with a world of order and oppression. Dionysus, the liberator, is the god of beginnings, a god who dies and is reborn perpetually. A god whose nature is ambiguous. One thing is certain: every new beginning starts with death. A student production.
