Festival | Heiva Pasifika: Pacific Islander Festival


Heiva Pasifika is a two-day festival celebrating  Pacific Islander culture with music, dancing, singing, drumming, arts & crafts, and more. Over 37,000 Pacific Islanders live in New York—now, Te Ao Mana brings their culture and ancient genius of their tupuna, or ancestors, to the city through a free festival called Heiva Pasifika NYC. In Tahitian, the word Heiva refers to cultural activities, pastimes, physical exercise, and festivals. Music, dancing, singing, and sporting events have always held an important place in Polynesian communities, and they are the centerpiece of this two-day festival. At Heiva Pasifika NYC 2023, visitors can experience an Ori Tahiti competition, cultural showcases of Pacific Island talent, an exhibition of work by artists and artisans, an array of specialized cultural workshops and master classes, and more.

Lecture | Addicted to Propaganda: How Russians Learned to Trust the Kremlin's Falsehoods


When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the world was shocked to learn how often Russians fell for the Kremlin's pro-war propaganda pushed through loyal state media. Some citizens even trusted television reports more than they believed their own family members in Ukraine. In his talk, Dr. Anton Shirikov will explain how authoritarian media can gain and cultivate such public trust, presenting evidence from surveys and experiments he conducted in Russia in recent years. He will discuss whether Russians are-as scholars often think-sophisticated and discerning news consumers, why they find propaganda messages credible, and why so few of them seek alternative information sources. This research offers insights into how Vladimir Putin's regime manages public opinion and maintains acceptance of the war.

Book Discussion | Alphabetical Disorder: The Last Window-Giraffe at 25 (in-person and online)


Celebrate International Translation Day and the US publication of The Last Window-Giraffe, Hungarian author Péter Zilahy’s groundbreaking fictional memoir of the 1996 protests in Belgrade. Translated by the late Tim Wilkinson and published by Sandorf Passage with a foreword by Marina Abramović, the new edition marks the 25th anniversary of the book’s original release, and the 25th country in which it has appeared. With ongoing wars and autocrats vying for power around the world, this meditation on life under a dictatorship, modeled after a Hungarian primary school textbook, continues to speak to us both as a history lesson and a warning about what the future can hold.  Author Péter Zilahy will be joined by two of his book’s translators, married couple Mari Alföldy and Viacheslav Sereda, for conversation and readings from the Hungarian, Dutch, Russian, and English versions of the book.

Book Discussion | Ukraine Is Not Dead Yet: A Family Story of Exile and Return (in-person and online)


Author Megan Buskey presents her family's story of exile and return to Ukraine, in discussion with Brigid O'Keeffe, Professor, Brooklyn College. When Megan Buskey’s grandmother Anna dies in Cleveland in 2013, Megan is compelled in her grief to uncover and document her grandmother’s life in Ukraine. A Ukrainian American, Buskey returns to her family’s homeland and enlists her relatives there to help her in her quest—and discovers much more than she expected. The result is an extraordinary journey that traces one woman’s story across Ukraine’s difficult twentieth century, from a Galician village emerging from serfdom, to the “bloodlands” of Eastern Europe during World War II, to the Siberian hinterlands where Anna spent almost two decades in exile before receiving the rare opportunity to emigrate from the Soviet Union in the 1960s. In the course of her research, Megan encounters essential and sometimes disturbing aspects of recent Ukrainian history, such as Nazi collaboration, the rise and persistence of Ukrainian nationalism, and the shattering impact of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Yet her wide-ranging inquiries keep leading her back to universal questions: What does family mean? How can you forge connections between generations that span different cultures, times, and places? And, perhaps most hauntingly, how can you best remember a complicated past that is at once foreign and personal?

Festival | Astronomy Night


Astronomy Nights feature fun-filled and educational experiences for the whole family, including talks from leading scientists and activities and demos led by Museum educators. Local astronomers will be on hand with their high-powered telescopes to help visitors navigate the night sky and answer questions about astronomy and stargazing. Guests are welcome to bring their own binoculars or look through the telescopes of the experts. Schedule*: 5:30pm-7:30pm - Families and visitors with young children are invited to take part in drop-in activities. Activities include: Astronaut Self-Portrait: Create a portrait of yourself as one of the next astronauts to go to the Moon. Mission Medallion: Create a commemorative medallion for a future space mission. 5:30-7:30pm - Breath of Fresh Air: Guests will do a small science experiment to learn how astronauts clean CO2 out of the air they breathe in space. 6:00pm & 7:00pm - Poof! Life in a Vacuum Demonstration: Discover the importance of the Earth's atmosphere and why astronauts need to wear spacesuits. Using a bell jar and vacuum pump, Museum educators will mimic the vacuum of space and its effect on objects. 6:30pm-7:30pm - Special Featured Guest Discussion. Dance Performance | Migratory Patterns: Outdoor Dance with a Live Score


A new work by choreographer Matthew Westerby, in collaboration with co-producer Jim Furlong. The production is performed by a multi-generational cast of professional dancers alongside community dancers from Hudson Guild Theatre Company, and set to a commissioned score played live by composers John P. Hastings and Travis Just. Inspired by the phenomenon of migration, the piece represents the personal heritage and identity of each performer. The content was developed through creative workshops that facilitated dialogue, movement making, and collaboration across the spectrum of age and experience., The program also features the premiere of a new duet titled Autonomous States and a performance by MWC 2.

Book Discussion | Sovereign Intimacy: Private Media and the Traces of Colonial Violence


In the early 1990s, Israeli television began dedicating Memorial Day air time to videos produced by the grieving families of soldiers killed in the line of duty. When these videos first appeared during a period of growing Israeli discontent with the occupation of southern Lebanon, they were widely perceived as a challenge to the state, reclaiming the dead from Israel’s militaristic memory culture by resituating them in intimate domestic contexts via mediated commemorations. By tracing an emerging private media system of freelance filmmaking, privatized television, state institutes of care, and grassroots campaigns, Laliv Melamed reveals how these videos nevertheless evade a fundamental critique of Israeli militarism, which is instead invited into the familiar space of the home. These intimate connections of memory and media exploit bonds of kinship and reshape larger relationships between the state and its citizens, enabling a collective disavowal of colonial violence. In Sovereign Intimacy, Laliv Melamed offers a poignant and critical view of the weaponization of home media and mourning in service of the neoliberal settler state.

A digital showcase of contemporary Italian artworks and prestigious Italian private collections.  Born in Italy, the PicassoDefi project brings together key players in the art world to promote selected artists through local and international exhibitions, fairs, and events, building a dialogue between tradition and innovation. The soiree will open with a presentation of a hard-copy catalog prefaced and critiqued by art Francesco Gallo Mazzeo, independent curator and tenured professor of art history at the Rome Academy of Fine Arts, featuring works by Italian artists Tobia Ravà, Trapanig, Michele Valenza, Michele Simonetti, Gabriel Lass, and Disemino. A digital version of the publication will be displayed on a large high-definition screen. A second monitor will exhibit a catalog of pieces from eminent private collections in Italy, including sections on paintings, sculptures, photographs, hand-made books, limited edition coins, medals, banknotes, and limited series watches. The event will also feature projections of works by Ukranian-Italian photographer and video artist Disemino.

Discussion | Notes on Reality Art: An Evening with Artist Signe Pierce


Multimedia artist Signe Pierce provides an interactive and entertaining perspective on her art while in conversation with art writer Cassie Packard. Signe Pierce is an American artist known for her work in the fields of photography, performance, and video. Her work often focuses on themes of identity, the body, and technology, and frequently features her own image in surreal and highly staged scenes which challenge societal norms and conventions. Pierce explores the dynamic among the material, the spiritual, and the virtual whilst examining the impact that technology is having on our perceptions of self, psyche, and soul. Her highly stylized images and provocative lyrics aim to encourage self-reflection about what it means to be real in an increasingly simulated age. Pierce’s works have been shown at MoMA, Athens Biennial, Palais de Tokyo, and the New Museum.

Concert | Scorching 12-Piece Cuban Ensemble


The scorching hot Cuban ensemble Son Del Monte is led by master Timbalero, Manuel Rivera, formerly of the Yambu Orchestra and Sonsublime. The 12-piece Son Del Monte band incorporates trombones alongside lively vocals and soaring contributions from flute, violin, trombone, piano, and congas to merge charanga and conjunto musical styles into a uniquely New York sound that Rivera has dubbed chajunto. You'll call it "perfecto" as this talented cadre of musicians perform a hard-driving whirlwind of melodic power that pays homage to the son cubano greats of past and present.
