Festival | 4th Annual Camp Doughboy WWI History Weekend


The fourth annual Camp Doughboy World War I History Weekend will bring living history, reenactors, authors, experts, vintage vehicles, and animals. This is the largest free public WWI exhibition in the United States. Reenactors representing the Allies and Central Powers--as well as civilians in Edwardian-era attire--are invited living history participants. The centennial of the service members returning to Governors Island is in 2019 and this group of volunteer reenactors will share the story of WWI participants. Braille games and activities will help you put your skills into practice. This study group welcomes blind and sighted learners alike. Braille is a tactile writing system used by people who are visually impaired. It is traditionally written with embossed paper. Braille users can read computer screens and other electronic supports using refreshable braille displays. They can write braille with the original slate and stylus or type it on a braille writer, such as a portable braille notetaker or computer that prints with a braille embosser.

Before there was New York, there was a sleepy outpost of the Dutch West India Company called Nieuw Amsterdam. The entirety of the colony that was New Amsterdam--which eventually evolved into one of the world's greatest cities--could be found south of Wall Street. Participants will walk through what is now known as the Financial District, discuss the Dutch origins in New Amsterdam, their relationship with the indigenous Lenape tribe, the transition from Dutch trading outpost to English colony to the (temporary) capital of a new independent nation, and much more.

New York Opera Forum performs the complete opera of Das Rheingold by Richard Wagner. A live musical recital performed in concert with piano accompaniment. Das Rheingold is the first of the four music dramas that constitute Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, (English: The Ring of the Nibelung).As the "preliminary evening" within the cycle, Das Rheingold gives the background to the events that drive the main dramas of the cycle. It recounts Alberich's theft of the Rhine gold after his renunciation of love; his fashioning of the all-powerful ring from the gold and his enslavement of the Nibelungs; Wotan's seizure of the gold and the ring, to pay his debt to the giants who have built his fortress Valhalla; Alberich's curse on the ring and its possessors; Erda's warning to Wotan to forsake the ring; the early manifestation of the curse's power after Wotan yields the ring to the giants; and the gods' uneasy entry into Valhalla, under the shadow of their impending doom.
