Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” This tour repeats every Monday.

Lecture | The Elite Uneducation and Imposed Nonage

The speed of a fleet is decided by the slowest ship; the direction of a fleet is decided by the leading ship. While education is essential in any society, education at leading institutions is critical for fostering generations of leaders beyond making a living. The rapid changing places such as China are particularly yearning for leaders who have a deep understanding of humanities, cultures and science, who have far-sighted vision, who are equipped with rational, critical and creative thinking capability, and who possess characters of perseverance and determination. The presence or absence of such leaders affects the future of China and the world. In this talk, the situation of leading educational institutions in China will be objectively discussed. The philosophical as well as mechanistic aspects of education reform will be analyzed. Speaker: Chenjian (C.J.) Li, University Chair Professor, Peking University

Talk | Arbëreshë: The Italo-Albanian Communities of Southern Italy

The Arbëreshë (or Italo-Albanian) people are the descendants of the Albanian refugees who fled to Italy between the 14th and 18th centuries as a consequence of the Ottoman invasion of the Balkans. The Arbëreshë are currently found in scattered villages around Southern Italy and Sicily, and zealously preserve their unique language, religious rites, and traditions. Speaker Francesco Altimari, Professor of Albanology at the Università della Calabria, will acquaint the audience with the Arbëreshë's peculiar culture, by providing a discussion of their extraordinary history and heritage, in Italian with English translation. The talk will be followed by a performance by the Peppa Marriti Band, on stage for the first time in the United States. Established in the Arbëreshë town of Santa Sofia d’Epiro, in northern Calabria, this group of musicians gained international notoriety for their modern reinterpretations of Italo-Albanian traditional folk music.
