Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” This tour repeats every Monday.

Conference | Yiddish Songs From Latin America

Sao Paulo-based singer, Nicole Borger, founder of Brazil's Kleztival, South America's largest Jewish music festival, leads a program combining a lecture with musical excerpts, focusing on Yiddish songs developed in South America. South America has received masses of immigrants, among them, Jews fleeing persecutions. From the Inquisition in the 16th Century, to the Holocaust in the 20th, and to modern day, these immigrants have established Jewish presence not only in urban areas, but also in far-away places. Their presence from the Amazonian jungle to the southern lands of Argentina has inspired mutual dialogue between local and immigrant cultures, especially through music. Nicole Borger's presentation spotlights Yiddish songs from Argentina and Brazil, spanning the generational gap, from the first generation of Ashkenazi immigrants to the contemporary music. Nicole Borger is a Brazilian singer and songwriter who lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Nicole's fusion of traditional Brazilian and Yiddish music is "exquisitely crafted in affecting gesture and melismatic beauty", according to World Music Report. She is also the creator and executive director of the Jewish Music Institute of Brazil, IMJBr, and the producer of Kleztival - the biggest South American Jewish Music Festival, which, from October 26 to November 3, 2019, will celebrate its 10thanniversary.

Author Reading | Erou: A Modern Hero's Journey

Erou uses the framework of the Greek epic to examine the workings of a nuclear family, in particular a father/husband whose life, marriage, and death are imagined as a kind of hero’s journey, recounted in the form of a modern “epic” poem that is interwoven throughout the manuscript. As the father moves in the space between life and death, reality and myth, the book also reconciles with the place of the wife/mother and daughter as the ones left behind.  With author  Maya Phillips.
