Conference | Freedom of Speech: A Curriculum for Studies Into Darkness

This event addresses the perennially contested right to free speech. The effort stems from an invitation by artist and filmmaker Amar Kanwar, and his artwork, Such a Morning (2017), which can be seen as an allegory for retreating into darkness to consider ideas and realities that require profound reorientation. In the context of today's fraught political climate in the U.S. and internationally, the partner organizations came together to present public seminars from each of their particular perspectives as well as those of artists, writers, and poets. This two-day event assembles both the partners in this project, as well as presenters from the original seminars, to engage in a public discussion of where this in-depth series of conversations has led us.

Opening Reception | Ministry for All: Two Brazilian Collaborators

A site-specific intervention by two Brazilian collaborators: architect Carla Juaçaba and artist Marcelo Cidade. Buildings are often positioned as beacons of progress and symbols of growth and power. Their foundations, dug solidly into the earth, aim to give shape to new visions for future social ideals and to frame the identities of the territories in which they are located. Ministry for All takes its title from the monumental work of civic buildings by architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) that once stood as an emblem of social, political, and economic development in what would be Brazil's new capital, Brasilia. Built between 1956-1960, the city was laid out in an open plan by architect Lucio Costa (1902-1998) to be a modern utopia in which all aspects of life had a distinct space, and all buildings had an explicit agenda.

Author Reading | New Women Voices of African Fiction

Two authors of two ambitious debut novels. Novoyo Tshuma is a Zimbabwean writer living in Houston. House of Stone is her sweeping epic spanning the fall of Rhodesia through Zimbabwe's turbulent beginnings, exploring the persistence of the oppressed in a young nation seeking an identity but built on forgetting. Namwali Serpell is a Zambian writer who teaches at Cal-Berkeley. The Old Drift is an intergenerational saga that combines history and romance and science fiction--revealing the cruelties and absurdities of colonialism, and the yearning to create and cross borders. A special opportunity to hear these exciting writers read from and discuss their work.

Opening Reception | Maureen Gallace: Evoking the Vernacular Milieu of the New England Coast

This exhibition will be the first devoted solely to her work on paper in which she uses both drawing and painting to evoke the vernacular milieu of the New England coast. Known for landscape and still life paintings, her meditative compositions belie a sophisticated rethinking of realism. With gestures equally immediate and thoughtful, Gallace reawakens the potential in the modernist idea of significant form which, as Clive Bell formulated, is a mode of simplified abstract representation where “we catch a sense of ultimate reality.” In her renderings of saltbox houses, beaches, and everyday flora, Gallace expands on this art historical premise to imbue her significant forms with personal significance—a recognizable sense of place shadowed with fugitive memory and the atmosphere of lived experience.

Performance | Passages | Pasajes: A Site-Specific Sonic Performance

Passages | Pasajes is a site-specific sonic performance that utilizes the lawn will occur the afternoon of Saturday, September 21, 2019, close to the autumnal equinox.  The work will manifest as 16 performers, mainly from the Uptown community, moving through the park space. The performers will expand and contract together as they pass melodies, passages of text, and the names of loved ones between each other through the park. The work will be in four 20-minute iterations with breaks in between. The audience will consist of both those coming directly to see the performance as well as users of the public park space.  The audience will be situated within the performers; they will be immersed in the performing elements as they sit or stand on the lawn in the park. The audience will be able to move about freely, to experience the work as they want, with the ability to come and go. The work will be presented in four distinct iterations to allow for the audience to continue to listen to the work or to allow new audience members to arrive as well as giving all performers the opportunity to be the leaders of a performance. The performers themselves will be helping in the creation of the work. Their personal histories will form parts of the materials utilized in the performance. This collaboration will foster a democratizing effect and ideally create a non-hierarchical structure to the work. The performance will be bilingual, in Spanish and English, to better display the polyglot nature of the community.

Discussion | Conservation Storytelling at National Geographic

Over the last ten years, wildlife storytelling at National Geographic has evolved from stories with a focus on behavior towards features that tackle issues about wildlife conservation and animal welfare. Beautiful wildlife images make people care about the natural world, but the stories that need to be told, the photographs that must be seen, are the ones that shine a light on our relationship with the natural world. Photographers Kate Brooks, Jennifer Hayes, and Kirsten Luce will be in conversation with Sarah Leen, Director of Photography at National Geographic. They share their experiences covering the poaching crisis, climate change, and wildlife tourism.
