Although world famous, Harlem may be New York's best kept secret with some of the city's best architecture, food, music and people. Harlem's history is also one of the city's most dramatic, having gone through many ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic changes over the past roughly 400 years, which have resulted in a diverse array of places of worship, theaters, homes and eating establishments.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm until Dec. 12, 2017.

Systemic risk is the risk that developments in the financial system will disrupt financial stability and the economy. While systemic risk has been a central concern since the Credit Crisis of 2007–2009, the history of finance shows that financial crises occur frequently and threats to financial stability are constant, requiring careful monitoring and management of systemic risk. Aron Gottesman and Michael Leibrock discuss the core principles and dynamics of systemic risk, as well as a real-world approach to managing it. Talk will be followed by Q&A and book signing. Brazil has rescued over 50,000 people submitted to contemporary forms of slavery since 1995, when the government recognized before the United Nations that slavery persisted in the country. Journalist Leonardo Sakamoto has worked for two decades investigating slave labor cases and how global production networks benefit from it. He has received multiple threats from people and companies involved in these practices.  Sakamoto will discuss how slave labor is structured and who profits from it in Brazil. He will also address how conservative sectors have been working against the system designed to combat these crimes. The discussion will be framed around the attack on social, environmental and labor rights currently taking place not only in Brazil but on a global scale.

Nobel Laureate Sir Angus Deaton and fellow Princeton economist Anne Case’s recent work, Mortality and Morbidity in the 21st Century, identifies a shocking trend known as “deaths of despair.” While racial minorities in the U.S. have seen improvements in lifespan over the last two decades, more white middle-aged Americans have been dying younger, especially those with a high school education or less. Widespread addiction, suicide, alcoholic liver disease and heart disease, coupled with stagnant economic opportunities, have meant shorter lives characterized by pain and anguish.

On September 26, 1957, West Side Story opened at the glamorous Winter Garden Theatre in midtown Manhattan, but the true setting of this innovative musical masterpiece was the gritty streets and blue collar housing projects of the upper west side. Maria and Tony’s tragic romance unfolded where Lincoln Center and the library now stand. For this special program, West Side Story comes home – back to the neighborhood of the story’s setting; back to the archival home of Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince; back to its moments of creation, through the memories of original cast members and special guests. Lend your voice to the 60th anniversary celebration of West Side Story, where you'll see rare documents from the show’s creators, share a conversation with West Side Story veterans, and sing along to live performances of the show’s most beloved numbers.

A lone merchant, Anna Fierling, (played here by three actors) tries to achieve the irreconcilable aims of making money and keeping her children alive during the nightmare of the Thirty Years War. Bertolt Brecht's masterpiece of silence and survival seems only to have grown in stature since its premiere in 1941 as we consider the recent ravages of wars still plaguing the planet. This version by David Hare first premiered at The National Theatre in London in 1995. It features new original music composed for this student production by Matthew Dean Marsh.

Sit in the center of your life with the confidence that you can handle whatever comes up. Learning mindfulness, the practice of paying attention in the present moment without resistance or judgment can shift the course of our lives. Instead of being pushed around by our fears and hopes, we have the space to listen to ourselves and others, to pause, catch our breath, and respond to events wisely, rather than react automatically.
