Conference | The Gallatin Climate Change Initiative

When it comes to climate change, the work of scientists is conclusive: in the past half-century, that work has produced a widely accepted consensus that the planet is warming and that humans are responsible. Though scientists must continue to monitor the amount of warming and to track its effects, climate change is a complex problem whose unfolding will reach beyond such analysis. Recognizing this, scholars in fields other than the natural sciences have recently begun to mobilize their disciplinary expertise to respond to climate change. How can we use that study to imagine the transformations and losses of climate change? How can we make concrete the challenges that humans will face in the next century? How can we grapple with the ethical issues presented by a problem whose most intense effects will be experienced by populations other than those most responsible for planetary warming? How can we inspire people in the present to create a different future, to slow warming, or to mitigate its effects?

Tour | Central Park All-in-One Tour

It is easy to forget that you are in a crowded city while walking through this spectacular park! The original plan for the City of New York, laid out by the City Commissioners in 1811 did not include the park. But as the city grew rapidly in size, we needed a place for New Yorkers to get a breath of fresh air! Central Park, with its 843 acres of meadows, lawns, ponds, lakes and more, was the solution. Today it is one of the best-known parks in the world and is enjoyed by millions-both locals and tourists alike.

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Tour | High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Poetry Reading | Poets with Attitude

One night after a poetry reading, two poets sat on two bar stools after two glasses of vinho verde and wondered aloud, “What if poetry readings were never boring? What if instead of maybe one exciting / resonant / dynamic poet per reading, the entire line up was full of them? What if bland was banned once and for all?" Thus, PWA was born: a program of poets who read it like they wrote it, full of fire and heart and maybe also wine. Hosted by Morgan Parker and Tommy Pico, PWA's evening features special guests Ana Božicevic, Javier Zamora, and Jenny Zhang.

Classical Music | Collectio Musicorum presents Sounds of the Reformation

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the start of the Reformation. Collectio Musicorum brings to life music from that time in a concert. The concert brings together the music of the master composers of the time, from all different traditions. You will hear music by well-known names such as Josquin des Prez, Ludwig Senfl, and John Taverner, alongside the much lesser known Claude Goudimel, Eustachio Romano, and Conrad Rein. Also on the program is music by the Reformers themselves—Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli were composers as well as theologians, and understood the role of music in the lives of their congregations. Much of the music comes from the 16th century, but also included will be one of the most heart-rending of compositions—William Child’s “Lord, the Heather are Come into Your Temple”—written just prior to the English civil war. Collectio Musicorum presents concerts of music you will not hear elsewhere. Founded in 2013 by musicologist Jeff S. Dailey, Collectio Musicorum is devoted to giving the best possible performances of music from the earliest of times.
