Tour | Central Park All-in-One Tour

It is easy to forget that you are in a crowded city while walking through this spectacular park! The original plan for the City of New York, laid out by the City Commissioners in 1811 did not include the park. But as the city grew rapidly in size, we needed a place for New Yorkers to get a breath of fresh air! Central Park, with its 843 acres of meadows, lawns, ponds, lakes and more, was the solution. Today it is one of the best-known parks in the world and is enjoyed by millions-both locals and tourists alike.

Moore has been reporting on human rights, global health, and transitional justice in Africa for nearly a decade. In country after country and crisis after crisis, Moore has seen how international institutions overlook look expertise and sideline local actors. She’s turned to those same local actors as experts to produce ground-breaking and award-winning work. Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Author Reading | Pablo Piccato discusses his book A History of Infamy: Crime, Truth, and Justice in Mexico

A History of Infamy explores the broken nexus between crime, justice, and truth in mid-twentieth-century Mexico. Faced with the violence and impunity that defined politics, policing, and the judicial system in post-revolutionary times, Mexicans sought truth and justice outside state institutions. During this period, criminal news and crime fiction flourished. Civil society’s search for truth and justice led, paradoxically, to the normalization of extrajudicial violence and neglect of the rights of victims. Refreshments and appetizers to follow.

Tour | High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Poetry Reading | Poetry as Pluriverse: Thinking Global Language Justice

Poets from all corners of the earth have had something to teach us about the life and death of languages. As Carl Sandburg puts it, “words wrapped around your tongue today and broken to the shape of thought now and today…shall be faded hieroglyphics.” Will the plurality of poetic speech and the diversity of human languages be faded likewise and become obsolete in the not so distant future? If poetry, as language that lends itself to memorization and recitation, arises from the lived worlds of song and ritual incantation, what would happen to human societies when we could no longer sing the song or form emotional attachment to the rich traditions embodied by the plurality of poetic speech around the world? The presentation will include readings by Bei Dao, Mohammed Bennis, Nabaneeta Dev Sen, Sharmistha Mohanty, Daouda Ndiaye, Anne Waldman, Orlando White, Zhai Yongming, and Raúl Zurita
