Enjoy a poetry reading and discussion with poet/translator Sasha Dugdale and poet/trnslator/scholar Oksana Maksymchuk. Moderated by Mark Andryczyk. Contemporary poetry can challenge, explore uncomfortable truths, and bear witness to unimaginable experiences. Her varied cast of characters are abducted to foreign lands, travel through war zones, and are haunted by conflicts. Oksana Maksymchuk’s Still City reflects life in the wake of extreme and unpredictable violence. Beginning as a poetic journal kept from her hometime in Ukraine, 2021-22, it chronicles events as the poet, her family and community prepare for airstrikes, as well as nuclear, chemical and biological warfare. Together, Oksana and Sasha discuss what it is to write poetry in these times of conflict.

Jazz | "Psychedlic Folk" Sounds with Singer-Guitarist

Lila Bloom merges “psychedelic folk jazz” with raw emotional storytelling. A born-and-raised New Yorker, her fluid guitar work—echoing the intricacy of ’60s greats—anchors songs that move from tender lullabies to rage-filled war cries. With a diamond-cut voice that soars and dances like a jazz oracle, Lila’s singular sound will transform the stage into a canvass of poetic, sonic watercolor.

Talk | Learn about Bowery, NYC's Oldest Street

For this event, join author David Mulkins for a review of The Bowery, a just-released pictorial history of New York City's oldest street. "The Bowery is more than a neighborhood guide. It’s a preservation effort in paperback form: a defense of memory, place, and the ragged dignity of lives lived outside the spotlight. Mulkins doesn’t sanitize the Bowery’s history, and he doesn’t let us look away. Instead, he invites us to see. A community garden where a vacant lot once rotted. A neighborhood built not just on bricks and bones, but on stories." -Michael Quinn, The Village Star-Revue

Talk | Ukrainian Writers Discuss Occupation & Cultural Survival

Since 2014, parts of Ukraine--including Crimea and Donetsk--have lived under Russian occupation, with the 2022 full-scale invasion expanding that violence to cities like Nova Kakhovka. In this urgent and deeply personal conversation, three Ukrainian voices explore what it means to live with, remember, and resist occupation. Chef and author Olia Hercules, born in now-occupied Nova Kakhovka, shares how food becomes a language of memory and identity in Strong Roots, her first memoir. Novelist Volodymyr Rafeyenko, originally from Donetsk, reflects on exile, absurdity, and survival in Length of Days and Signals of Being. Scholar and translator Natalia Shpylova-Saeed introduces a powerful new anthology of Crimean poetry and prose, preserving voices from a region silenced since 2014. Together, they trace how storytelling--across genres--becomes an act of cultural defiance. The conversation will be moderated by professor and writer Sophie Pinkham.

Screening | The Phantom Carriage (1921): Classic Silent Horror Film with Live Music

Step into a chilling Halloween-season experience as the silent film classic The Phantom Carriage (1921) is brought to life with a brand-new score by Amir Sanjari performed by Orange Road Quartet. This early horror masterpiece weaves a haunting ghost story, morality tale, and groundbreaking special effects that continue to captivate audiences today. The last person to die on New Year's Eve before the clock strikes twelve is doomed to take the reins of Death's chariot and work tirelessly collecting fresh souls for the next year. So says the legend that drives the Phantom Carriage. The story, based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlof, concerns an alcoholic, abusive ne'er-do-well who is shown the error of his ways, and the pure-of-heart Salvation Army sister who believes in his redemption. This extraordinarily rich and innovative silent classic is a Dickensian ghost story and a deeply moving morality tale, as well as a showcase for groundbreaking special effects. Play | Shakespeare's As You Like It: Classic Comedy Reimagined in the Nightclub Scene

A bold adaptation of William Shakespeare's As You Like It, set in a utopia inspired not by the pastoral woods, but by the transformative power of nightclubs. This Arden is recast as a fictional projection of clubs across cities like San Francisco, Miami, and New York--spaces where generations have sought connection, release, and redemption. Sometimes family is your greatest enemy and sometimes family makes home wherever they go. In this vibrant new imagining of Shakespeare's comedy, Arden becomes both a dance floor and a dreamscape: a place where you might escape villains, but never the voice rising from within. Exiled nobles, lovesick shepherds, and sharp-tongued fools collide in a world where identity shifts, desire runs free, and every heart is tested. Here, love may be foolish, messy, and exhilarating--but it always finds the spotlight. Exploring class, gender, sexuality, romance, and identity across time and place, this As You Like It becomes a bold meditation on how communities imagine, build, and find utopias in their own time. Written by William Shakespeare. Directed by Glynis Rigsby.
