Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would serve as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Each tour is one hour, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session with an assigned docent.

Book Discussion | Expert Discusses Her New Book on Social Revolution in Uzbekistan (In Person AND Online!)

Social historian Marianne Kamp discusses her new book, Collectivization Generation: Oral Histories of a Social Revolution in Uzbekistan. Morgan Liu will serve as a discussant. Born between the early 1900s and the early 1920s, the collectivization generation were rural youth who participated in the transformation of Uzbekistan’s agricultural life in the 1930s as children or young adults. Readers meet Uzbeks whose fathers disappeared into the Stalinist gulag, who suffered from starvation and orphanhood, and readers meet Uzbeks who told of embracing the collectivization project and of feeling rewarded with pay and recognition. The talk then turns to using oral history interviewing for research in international contexts.

Created by a video collective formed in 1987 to document AIDS activism, this documentary depicts an informative record of the early struggles against the federal government's inaction over the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Chanting "Test drugs, not people" and "Educate, don't isolate", activist groups took to the streets of New York City to denounce mandatory testing as a discriminatory practice and to demand more HIV/AIDS research and educational initiatives. Discussion | Explore the Concepts of "Victimhood" and "Oppressor" through History (In Person AND Online!)

Attend an event that brings together Pascal Bruckner and Adam Gopnik for a conversation about the framing of social justice.  “Victimhood” at the hands of "oppressors" is the lens through which many in the new generations have learned to analyze history and current events.  Has this paradigm, inspired by a quest for social justice, gone too far? Is it the right key to understanding how the world works? Does it provide a path to greater justice or rather encourage an adversarial ethos, notably vis-a-vis the West, that some have described as "suicidal empathy" embraced by "useful idiots"? Pascal Bruckner, a distinguished French writer, essayist, and public intellectual, has been among the first to point to the centrality of what he calls "the tyranny of Western guilt" as the driver of this new ideology, and to denounce it as a threat to the preservation of Western societies.

Author Reading | Scholar & Author Shares His New Book: Weimar Under the Palms: Pacific Palisades, German Exiles, and the Invention of Hollywood

Enjoy a reading by theater scholar and author Thomas Blubacher from Weimar Under the Palms: Pacific Palisades, German Exiles, and the Invention of Hollywood (translated by Elizabeth Lauffer) followed by a conversation between the author and Sabine von Mering. In the early 20th century, Pacific Palisades was home to America’s most modern film studio of the time as well as the proposed site of the world’s largest Christian center. But by the end of the 1920s, the Los Angeles neighborhood had become the refuge of the rich and beautiful as German and Austrian filmmakers, among them Salka and Berthold Viertel. They were soon followed by cultural and intellectual giants of the Weimar Republic who were fleeing Europe, such as Max Reinhardt, Hanns Eisler, or Max Horkheimer. These great minds turned Pacific Palisades into a “Weimar under the palm trees.” Though many were successful in exile—including Vicki Baum, Thomas Mann, and Lion Feuchtwanger—others felt as if they were in a “sun prison” far from home. Recounting a story of glamor and great minds, Thomas Blubacher tells of the history of German-speaking exiles that is still alive there today, going on a foray through the film industry. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event, and there will be a book signing following the program.
