Lecture | Expert Talks about the Literature of Abandonment in Revolutionary Russia and Ukraine (In Person AND Online!)

This talk is about poetry and catastrophe, violence and relief work, artistic literature and documentation, injury and care. The lens through which Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures Harriet Lisa Murav discusses these topics is the Jewish concept of “hefker,” originating in property law, where it refers to objects that are ownerless and up for grabs. I explore the multivalence of the hefker concept as a legal, poetic, existential, and political/social term, showing how Yiddish poets, Russian language authors, aid workers, and medical professionals—all responding to the pogroms of the Russian Civil War—used the term hefker to describe and conceptualize the experience of mass public violence. To declare a population or individual beyond the realm of law, to act with abandon, to abandon an object, to abandon your ego--these are some of the ways the term evolved. The talk will examine instances of abandonment in documents and artistic literature in Yiddish and Russian.

Author Reading | Bestselling Nonfiction Author Launches Her New Book, Pride and Pleasure: The Schuyler Sisters in the Age of Revolution

This nonfiction account by Amanda Vaill (Everbody Was So Young) follows Angelica and Elizabeth Schuyler, born to wealth and privilege in New York’s Hudson Valley during the latter half of the eighteenth century. The sisters were raised to make good marriages and supervise substantial households. Instead they became embroiled in the turmoil of America’s insurrection against Great Britain—and rebelled themselves, in ways as different as each was from the other, against the destiny mapped out for them. Drawing on deep archival research, including never-published records and letters, Amanda Vaill interweaves this family drama with its historical context, creating a narrative with the sweep and intimacy of a nineteenth-century novel. Full of battles and dinner parties, murky politics and transparent frocks, fierce loyalty and betrayals both public and personal, Pride and Pleasure brings two extraordinary American heroines to life.

Talk | Learn About the Afterlife of George Balanchine, a Legendary Choreographer

Dancer, writer, performance-maker, and Yale professor Emily Coates spent two years mapping far-flung artifacts related to George Balanchine found in archives. Gallery Talk | Memory & Migration in Art Talk with Artists & Curator

This conversation, moderated by Natalia Viera Salgado (Puerto Rican curator and curatorial consultant based in New York City, founder of :Pública Espacio Cultural, an independent art space), Associate Curator, brings together the practices of artists Lizania Cruz (Dominican participatory artist and designer interested in how migration affects ways of being & belonging), Guadalupe Maravilla (artist & activist), and Ronny Quevedo (multidisciplinary artist who works with Indigenous ideas & culture) to explore the politics of migration, belonging, and memory across the Americas. Through participatory projects, healing rituals, and reimagined cartographies, these artists engage with personal and collective histories shaped by colonial legacies and diasporic experience. By reflecting on the intersections of art, and lived experience, the talk invites audiences to think critically about how memory is preserved, contested, and reconfigured in relation to the ongoing realities of migration. This program is organized in conjunction with the exhibition Whose America?, on view October 16, 2025 - January 10, 2026.

Author Reading | NYT Writer Talks about Her new Nonfiction Book, The Talented Mrs. Mandelbaum

Award-winning journalist Margalit Fox discuss her latest book, The Talented Mrs. Mandelbaum: The Rise and Fall of an American Organized-Crime Boss, the true story of a once-infamous criminal mastermind and visionary businesswoman in Gilded Age New York. Synopsis: In 1850, an impoverished twenty-five-year-old named Fredericka Mandelbaum came to New York in steerage and worked as a peddler on the streets of Lower Manhattan. By the 1870s she was a fixture of high society and an admired philanthropist. How was she able to ascend from tenement poverty to vast wealth? The Talented Mrs. Mandelbaum paints a vivid portrait of Gilded Age New York--a city teeming with nefarious rogues, capitalist power brokers and Tammany Hall bigwigs, all straddling the line between underworld enterprise and "legitimate" commerce. Combining deep historical research with the narrative flair for which she is celebrated, Margalit Fox tells the unforgettable true story of a once-famous heroine whose life exemplifies America's cherished rags-to-riches narrative while simultaneously upending it entirely. Considered one of the foremost explanatory writers and literary stylists in American journalism, Margalit Fox retired in 2018 from a 24-year-career at the New York Times, where she was most recently a senior writer.

Gallery Talk | Artist & Childhood Educator Discuss Groundbreaking Work of Psychologist Rhoda Kellogg

Brian Belott and Jennifer DiGioia discuss psychologist and early-childhood educator Rhoda Kellogg. Rhoda Kellogg (1898-1987) was the director of the Phoebe A. Hearst Preschool Learning Center (which was a part of the Golden Gate Kindergarten Association, in San Francisco) for nearly three decades. Over the course of her lifetime, Kellogg amassed a collection of more than two million drawings by children. Kellogg gained global recognition for her groundbreaking studies in children’s art. In her books, What Children Scribble and Why (1955), The Psychology of Children’s Art (1967), and Analyzing Children’s Art (1969), Kellogg explained and documented her theories. She showed that children from all cultures follow a similar graphic evolution in their drawings, starting from scribbles and progressing through certain basic forms. She also believed that children’s art could offer insights into their mental development and educational progress. These theories laid the foundation for the educational program still used at the Hearst Preschool Learning Center today. Brian Belott is an artist, curator, performer, and publisher based in Brooklyn, NY. He is the lead archivist of the Rhoda Kellogg International Child Art Collection and a lifelong collector of child art. Jennifer DiGioia is in her 30th year as an early childhood educator and advocate. She taught at Phoebe A. Hearst Preschool Learning Center, founded by Rhoda Kellogg, for over a decade.

Author Reading | Prize-winning Danish Author Celebrates His New Novel, Visions and Temptations (In Person AND Online!)

Danish author, poet, and translator Harald Voetmann discusses his book, Visions and Temptations, with writer and journalist Rivka Galchen. Spurning carnal desire and earthly temptations all his life, the mystic Othlo is now in the care of his brother monks, including the odious Wolkbart. Despite the spare walls which surround his sickbed, Othlo frolics with Holy Dionysius in the Garden of Head-bearers (each carries his own head for eternity), descends from the island of Heaven, visits a brothel patronized by fallen angels who spawn nightmarish offspring eternally, and witnesses the souls of the once gluttonous wealthy fighting over scraps of rotting crabmeat in a ditch in Hell. Accompanied by a sinister guide and a three-hoofed lamb, our hero sees things that make Hieronymsous Bosch’s hellscape look like a rose garden. The third and final book in a series about mankind’s desire to conquer nature, Visions and Temptations follows Awake and Sublunar. In each novel, a great if imperfect mind faces the inevitable demise of the body. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served. Books will be available for sale after the conversation.

This performance is a tribute to the pre-bebop era, filled with nostalgia and swing, offering a rich tapestry of sound that captures the essence of 1930s radio broadcasts.

Play | Shakespeare's As You Like It: Classic Comedy Reimagined in the Nightclub Scene

A bold adaptation of William Shakespeare's As You Like It, set in a utopia inspired not by the pastoral woods, but by the transformative power of nightclubs. This Arden is recast as a fictional projection of clubs across cities like San Francisco, Miami, and New York--spaces where generations have sought connection, release, and redemption. Sometimes family is your greatest enemy and sometimes family makes home wherever they go. In this vibrant new imagining of Shakespeare's comedy, Arden becomes both a dance floor and a dreamscape: a place where you might escape villains, but never the voice rising from within. Exiled nobles, lovesick shepherds, and sharp-tongued fools collide in a world where identity shifts, desire runs free, and every heart is tested. Here, love may be foolish, messy, and exhilarating--but it always finds the spotlight. Exploring class, gender, sexuality, romance, and identity across time and place, this As You Like It becomes a bold meditation on how communities imagine, build, and find utopias in their own time. Written by William Shakespeare. Directed by Glynis Rigsby.
