This magical--and most unusual--intersection of five Manhattan blocks spans over four centuries of NYC transformation. Start this part-history, part-memoir tour learning about the Lenape Trail, enjoy architectural highlights including a stunning example of Arts & Crafts architecture built by the Astors, and imagine this busy Belgian block-paved intersection during the days when meat hung from screeching metal canopies early in the morning. Tour | NoHo Historic District: Cooper Union, Elegant Townhouses, The Public Theater, and More
See and learn about Cooper Union, the site of Lincoln's 1860 landmark address to NYC; Colonnade Row, the city's nine most elegant townhouses (1833), five of which are still there; the Public Theater, created from the Astor Library (1853) and source of Hair, Chorus Line, and Hamilton; and Merchant's House Museum (1832), still intact inside and outside today. Experience the cultural revolution from the early townhouses to the homes of artists and musicians: Keith Richards, Cher, and Brittany Spears (all in the building that housed Tower Records), and the homes/studios of the artists Jean Michael Basquiet, Robert Raushenberg, and Chuck Close. You'll see modern buildings too, including the homes of supermodel Gigi Hadid and Ian Schrager, creator of Studio 54. And there's even a tech center with the headquarters of IBM's AI effort, Facebook, and AOL.

There are an impressive number of civil rights memorials on the Upper West Side, starting with a large one to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in front of the school named after him on Amsterdam Avenue at 66th Street. You will begin with a "deep dive" into the content and artistry of that complicated work of art. Other stops will relate to Freedom Summer, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Booker T. Washington, and even Dorothy Parker. There will be plenty of time for comments and questions afterwards.
