Reading | AAWW at 30: The Village People (in-person and online)

The early 90's were an exciting time for Asian American creativity in New York City. While Hunter College was establishing its Asian American Studies program uptown, a diverse group of Asian American poets and writers were creating a vibrant community space in the East Village called the Asian American Writers' Workshop. Housed in a basement underneath a Gap store, the organization flourished with its own reading series and open mic. Come join us for a special reading with many of the writers who helped make the St. Marks space so special. Vivian Louie, director of the Asian American Studies Program & Center at Hunter College, will discuss the growth of the AAPI population in the nation and in NYC that set the stage for the formation of the AAWW and AAS at Hunter College. With readings and reflections from Marina Budhos, Nancy Bulalacao, Tina Chang, Christina Chiu, Curtis Chin, Luis Francia, Lisa Ko, Marie G. Lee, Ed Lin, Vina and Manuel D. Orden, Bino Realuyo, Purvi Shah, Monique Truong, Eileen Tabios, and Barbara Tran.

Opening Reception | Olive Allen: Welcome to the Metaverse

The exhibition spans sculpture, installation, video and NFT artworks. It will deconstruct the emergence of how immersive experiences are reshaping 21st century life. Olive Allen has created several new large-scale projects that will transform the gallery into an experiential playground, works that question how digital experience can be translated into the real world, radically altering how we see and interact with art, and ultimately connect with cultural communities both on and offline.  Olive Allen is an artist with a greatly unconventional journey reflected in the theme and overall approach to the exhibition; she is moving away from a traditional white cube environment to create a video game-like journey for the viewer to become a part of the Metaverse. The exhibition reveals artist’s deep fascination with society and technology, and the future of this interaction. One of the less obvious underlying themes is the search for one's own identity in the world that is so used to assigning labels and is quick to exclude those who don't fit in the pre-assigned box.

Jazz | The Steven Oquendo Latin Jazz Orchestra

The 19 piece SOLJO takes to the stage for 90 minutes of non-stop music. This concert is sure to be an "exhilarating " ending to National Jazz Appreciation Month on International Jazz Day. Steven Oquendo (musician, band leader and educator) was born in 1979 in New York City. Oquendo's love affair with music began at the tender age of 10, when he first learned to play the trumpet. He later attended one of the nation's most prestigious performing arts institutions -Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School- and was a member of the award-winning LaGuardia Concert Jazz Ensemble. During his attendance, the ensemble won first place in Jazz at Lincoln Center's 1996 Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival. Oquendo was individually awarded the Outstanding Soloist Award during the 1998 competition by Wynton Marsalis. That same year he was also a member of the prestigious Grammy All-American High School Jazz Orchestra. During this time, Jon Faddis and Wynton Marsalis mentored him - two of the most highly regarded jazz trumpeters.
