Performance | Islands in the Sea: Performance Art

Artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya transforms the site that honors the grieving process. Nine sculptures serve as beacons of reflection, lighting a path forward from losses that so many of us have suffered in the last few years. With this installation, visitors engage in a ritual reminiscent of Loi Krathong, a celebrated Thai festival of gratitude, forgiveness, and respect. Participants are invited to release a floating vessel to carry away their burdens, worries, or grief gently into the pool. Each vessel reflects the sky as it drifts along the water, forming a flotilla of shared struggle. The installation serves as a gentle reminder that while grief never fully leaves us, we can temper sorrow by embracing the many forms that grief and healing may take.

Opera | Handel's Masterpiece Orlando: Hero of Love in a Garden

Hans Tashjian, Bass; Jeffrey Mandelbaum, Countertenor; Elyse Anne Kakacek, Lyric Soprano; Heather Hill, Soprano; Hai-Ting Chinn, Mezzo Soprano; Rebecca Pechefsky, Harpsichordist, Baroque String Quartet (Rebecca Nelson, Rafa Prendergast, Jessica Park & Cullen O'Neil) Orlando, a knight from the Crusades, is originally the central character of an epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto. The story dramatizes his struggle between love and military glory. However, this production updates this conflict to reflect contemporary sensibilities, centering the questions of what it means to love truly, and how to endure pain and loss. George Frideric Handel brought baroque opera to its apogee, as his compositional brilliance amplified music's distinct power to communicate drama. Opera began as an experiment to demonstrate music's ability to reveal and manipulate the emotions behind a text, as opposed to solely mimicking the words. Baroque music relies heavily on a technique of bittersweet dissonance resolving into consoling consonance, which impacts a listener viscerally. The term "baroque" connotes this kind of lavish intensity, which captivates audiences' passions, bringing them personally into the experience.

Book Discussion | Art Worker: Doing Time in the New York Artworld

Alan Moore’s memoir that casts a raking light on a classic period in cultural history—the 70s and 80s in downtown Manhattan. Confirmed participants in the panel discussion: Marc H. Miller, Yasmin Ramirez, Leonard Abrams, Alan W. Moore, Stephen Zacks. The New York City artworld of the late 20th century seems far more fluid and changeable, with many more positions for its different actors to inhabit than the artworld of today. The market rules in all spheres of image-making, enforced by super-high valuations of traditional artwork, and global social media and streaming platforms. From art critic and video artist to radical organizer and academic, Moore played multiple roles in a seething scene of art galleries, nightclubs, and small publications. Written in an accessible style, Art Worker is in three parts, with characters, anecdotes, footnotes, and an extensive bibliography. It’s a book by a scholar written for a general audience.
