Dance Performance | ditch: World-Premiere Dance at Sunrise

ditch explores the interactions among the forces of gentrification; the history of community activism, especially in response to Hurricane Sandy; the current pressure of development that exacerbates income inequality; as well as the ecological interactions between the life at the edge of the island in the Lower East Side. The choreography is developed from the rhythms, tones and spatial inflections of movement generated by flows of people, the traffic, weather and water along the river's edge. ditch accesses and creatively explores the embodied knowledge that signals both danger and safety. How do we sense impending disasters? How do we seek safe havens? Exploring the possibilities of signaling through murky territory and dense movement, the choreography asks questions such as: What appears as a beacon? What is an orienting feature in an unstable system? The piece investigates squeezing and tightening as both a generator of movement and as choreographic strategy. The work aims to emanate an urgency and disquiet that drives the performer and viewer towards unexpected openings. Composer and sound artist: Jeff Kolar Performers/dancers: Evie Allison, Madeline Mellinger, Kaitlin Fox Costume designer: Susan Becker

Festival | Green Zine and Photo Book Fair

The term “green” is used as an adjective to describe someone to be inexperienced, fresh, brand-new. Zines are typically published with a sense of urgency — originally as a method to subvert glossy mainstream publications, zines have now become an alternative method of disseminating information outside of the internet. This fair will feature a selection of firsts, or “green” zinemakers, and emerging publications by both established and first time independent publishers. Landscape artist and activist Babbie Dunnington, in collaboration with a group of Teens, will produce the Green Reading Room as an attempt to foster independent publishing.

Concert | Fete de la Musique: Two Pioneering French Groups

Zdar will represent the electronic duo Cassius, who first started working together in 1988, producing albums for the iconic French rapper MC Solaar and doing remixes for the likes of Neneh Cherry, Bjork, Daft Punk, Air and Depeche Mode. Producers Philippe Cerboneschi and Hubert Blanc-Francard--better known as Philippe Zdar and Boom Bass--have since harnessed the pop appeal with an underground heart that defined the French house wave they contributed to in the late 90s. They're joined by Les Negresses Vertes--a group so named for the verbal abuse directed at its members at an early concert--who mix Latin, rai, and folk with a punk sensibility to make unique dance music.
