Gallery Talk | Made in New York City: The Business of Folk Art: Exhibition Tour

Folk art has flourished in the heart of New York City since the eighteenth century, contrary to popular belief that it was a rural genre that reflected local tastes, traditions, and needs. Around 100 works of art by self-taught artists tell the story about New York City as the center of America’s financial and commercial world from two perspectives simultaneously: “The Art of Business” portrays the people and places that were part of the city’s thrumming commercial life, and “The Business of Art” highlights the diverse mediums and formats used by the artists, artisans, and manufacturers. This tour of the exhibition is conducted by museum gallery guides.

Theater | The Tragedie of Othello By Shakespeare

The Actors Shakespeare Company will perform Shakespeare's The Tragedie of Othello. The Tragedie of Othello is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1603. It is based on the story Un Capitano Moro ("A Moorish Captain") by Cinthio, a disciple of Boccaccio, first published in 1565. The story revolves around its two central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army and his treacherous ensign, Iago. Given its varied and enduring themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike, and has been the source for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations.

Discussion | Translator Panel: How Did This Play Get into English?

Translating for the stage is a special skill, and sometimes plays pass through several hands on their way from their original language (such as French or Spanish) into English. In this brief conversation, Taylor Gaines (translator of Snow by Blandine Savetier and Waddah Saab) and Caridad Svich (playwright and translator of many plays from Spanish) will speak about the challenges of bringing the festival’s three plays into English. Staged Reading | The Sickness of Stone: It All Comes Crumbling Down

Decades on, and a former dictator’s self-mythologizing mausoleum is crumbling from within. Hired by the government of today, a young researcher spends scrupulous hours seeking ways to keep it standing. But as Right and Left clash in the outside world and the political debate creeps violently towards the door of the monument, her attempts at professional distance are quickly challenged. Trapped inside with a guard whose motives are unclear, she can no longer escape her own hypocrisy, and her once-proud arguments are dangerously threatened from every corner.   Written by Blanca Domenech. Jazz | The DeJohnette-Coltrane-Garrison -- jazz supergroup

The DeJohnette-Coltrane-Garrison Trio is a multi-generational jazz supergroup. DeJohnette is a highly influential jazz drummer inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2007; Ravi Coltrane - post-bop jazz saxophonist - is the son of jazz pianist Alice Coltrane and saxophonist John Coltrane, who played with DeJohnette; Matthew Garrison is DeJohnette's godson, and an accomplished bassist in his own right, described by the New York Times as "an electric bass virtuoso." Fifty years ago DeJohnette played with Coltrane Garrison's fathers in John Coltrane's group; on the 2016 album In Movement, he plays Coltrane's haunting elegy "Alabama" with their sons. Harpist Brandee Younger, a modern harpist, under the influence of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane herself will open the show.
