Gallery Talk | Made in New York City: The Business of Folk Art: Exhibition Tour

Folk art has flourished in the heart of New York City since the eighteenth century, contrary to popular belief that it was a rural genre that reflected local tastes, traditions, and needs. Around 100 works of art by self-taught artists tell the story about New York City as the center of America’s financial and commercial world from two perspectives simultaneously: “The Art of Business” portrays the people and places that were part of the city’s thrumming commercial life, and “The Business of Art” highlights the diverse mediums and formats used by the artists, artisans, and manufacturers. This tour of the exhibition is conducted by museum gallery guides.

Opening Reception | (decrypted) micro-myths: Installation, Drawing, Mixed Media

A solo exhibition of installation, drawing, and mixed media works by New York-based artist Joseph Burwell. Burwell's multi-faceted presentations combine precise architectural elements with two-dimensional renderings, signs, and objects, displayed throughout the fragmented space in unconventional ways. There is no single ideal vantage point, but rather, we gain clues to the undercurrents of the work by circling its sculptural elements or peering through cut-outs that frame an opposite setting. The artist's background in architecture echoes in his dexterous use of industrial materials and sharply rendered interiors, and while the work proposes settings that could be inhabited, those settings are also seemingly illogical, populated by objects that take the place of human characters.

Opening Reception | 13BC: Fatal Act

Fatal Act concerns the ongoing legacy of atomic warfare and testing in the United States, spanning histories of war, toxicity, and the images made to celebrate or contest this legacy.  The project takes its bearings from an unlikely correspondence between Claude Eatherly, the U.S. Air Force pilot whose "all clear" weather report precipitated the bombing of Hiroshima and whose botched robberies after the war landed him in and out of jail and psychiatric care, and Günther Anders, the German anti-nuclear activist and theorist who fixated on technology's capacity to outpace any human intention. More particularly, Fatal Act takes shape around a film that never came to be: Bob Hope’s attempted biopic of the life and crimes of Eatherly, a film that Anders warned stridently against, arguing that it would falsify the most “fatal act” of the century. The exhibition extends from Anders’s rejection of the unmade film to articulate a broader refusal of the iconic images and atomic aesthetics that shaped public memory and sought to nullify revolt against nuclear proliferation, pollution, and the exploitation of indigenous land. The works that comprise Fatal Act develop provisional and analogical forms that seek to grapple with these histories, tracing paths between prop closets and desert test sites, casinos and waterfalls, Foley studios and Geiger counters, Hollywood sets and military hospitals.

Opening Reception | Tarzan Boy: A Hypnagogic Terrain of Schoolboy Days

Tarzan Boy is by Chicago-based artist Billy Buck and Salt Lake City-based artist Jacob Haupt. Through super heroes, dreams, and sorcery, this exhibition visits a hypnagogic terrain of schoolboy days. In these redesigned realities the mystique of the human figure is transformed and there is an affinity for the common place object. The show takes its title from the 1985 song “Tarzan Boy” by Baltimora. In this revisited boyhood, characters are elevated from their real life identities and disposable materials transcend their original purposes. Buck and Haupt unpretentiously utilize consumer items such as bologna slices, trash bags, rubber gloves, and tape, to name a few, as they explore the relationship of creating a photograph as a sculptural process. These works simultaneously reflect an innate desire to remain youthful while thoughtfully referencing the existential mortality inherent in superhero stories.

Discussion | Queer Resistance

Until recently, successes in the fight for social equality seemed irreversible. With the emergence of neo-conservative forces being demonstrated by right-wing populist movements everywhere, it is again becoming socially acceptable to take sexist, homophobic and transphobic positions. This puts all that has been achieved in question. Are there useful and contemporary forms of resistance to these social developments? How can established middle-class queers be moved to active resistance and the liberal parts of majority society be moved to give them firm support? What experiences of queer and/or feminist resistance within and outside Western culture can be utilized globally? What is there to learn from the history of the past 50 years? Panelists: Tatiana Cozzarelli (New York), Puelo Dier (Montreal), Alex Alí Méndez Díaz (Mexico City), and Jule Govrin (Berlin), Moderator: Jeffrey Masters

Movie in a Park | New York Short Films (Outdoors)

There are 8.6 million stories in the big city. Some are sad, some are funny, some are weird. Here are eleven of them. 7:15 PM: Doors Open 7:45 PM: Live Music from W. Y. Huang 8:30 PM: Film Begins 10:00 PM: Q&A 10:15 PM: After-Party sponsored by Corona Ah, New York. Since the advent of filmmaking, many have sought to replicate our city's uniquely gritty atmosphere on screen. The filmmakers in this program continue that cinematic endeavor, scouring the the five boroughs to bring us stories that might otherwise be overlooked: the internal lives of food delivery workers, the tangled, Erasure-scored romances of gay firefighters, the even more complex entanglements of Brooklyn's black vampires, and the pathological narcissism of Ridgewood hipsters. Of course, the urge to scream "enough with this city!" is chronicled here too, but New York can hold multitudes. These love letters to our shared civic experiment will remind you why you love it.
