Classical Music | Bach at Noon

The organ works of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) offered in 30-minute meditations. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term ‘baroque’ has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was ‘maestro di capella’ at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today’s music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi’s advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 11, 2018 to May 22, 2019.

Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Family Album / As the Plane Was Reaching Cruising Altitude

Margot Bergman's Family Album Chicago-based artist Margot Bergman presents recent paintings and, for the first time ever, photographs. Bergman (b. 1934) has sustained an active painting practice in Chicago since the 1950s and honed a peerless style of figuration. For the last 15 years her subject matter has focused on individual faces of imagined people, predominantly women. Her style is characterized by active expressionistic brush work, unconcerned with symmetry, realistic proportions, and traditional notions of femininity. Nathalie Du Pasquier's As the Plane Was Reaching Cruising Altitude Nathalie Du Pasquier presents an installation of colorful geometric paintings on paper and monochromatic wooden objects, using the architectural plan of the third floor gallery as a field for her composition. Juxtaposing two-dimensional patterns and three-dimensional constructions, she examines the relationship between pictorial space and actual planes in the surrounding environment.

Author Reading | The Dictionary As Data: What The Online Dictionary Tells Us About English

What makes a person look up a word? When do you use a dictionary? Looking up a word in the dictionary is an intimate act for each of us as individuals, but the words sought by millions of users put together tell us a surprising story about the English language. Peter Sokolowski presents this fascinating insight into language and popular culture. By watching trends of lookups on a heavily consulted online dictionary, lexicographers track which entries are being consulted at any given moment. Some words are perennial sources of curiosity, while others show spikes of interest triggered by news from the worlds of politics, entertainment, and sports. Some words express the general mood of the culture; others reflect a poignant specificity. At the same time, this Web traffic tells a story about the changing business of dictionaries--and what is expected of a dictionary in the 21st century. Peter Sokolowski is Editor at Large at Merriam-Webster. He has written definitions for many of Merriam-Webster’s dictionaries, is active as a blogger, podcaster, and speaker on language, and has served as pronouncer for spelling bees worldwide. He was named among TIME's 140 Best Twitter Feeds of 2013.

Discussion | Thoughts On Networking

You may be avoiding networking because you think it is dark magic requiring you to be a super salesman who imposes on hundreds of contacts so you can ask total strangers for a job.  based on what we hear, who could blame you?  In fact networking is widely misunderstood.  Networking, properly done, is an opportunity to be ourselves, talking with people naturally about things that interest us both so that over time we built our connection to mutual benefit. Coach Win Sheffield will look at how we approach our contacts and re-imagine networking as something we can do naturally and with ease. Learn: * How to broaden who you reach out to * What kinds of networking are best suited to you * How to convey your value to your audience

Dance Performance | ditch: World-Premiere Dance

ditch explores the interactions among the forces of gentrification; the history of community activism, especially in response to Hurricane Sandy; the current pressure of development that exacerbates income inequality; as well as the ecological interactions between the life at the edge of the island in the Lower East Side. The choreography is developed from the rhythms, tones and spatial inflections of movement generated by flows of people, the traffic, weather and water along the river's edge. ditch accesses and creatively explores the embodied knowledge that signals both danger and safety. How do we sense impending disasters? How do we seek safe havens? Exploring the possibilities of signaling through murky territory and dense movement, the choreography asks questions such as: What appears as a beacon? What is an orienting feature in an unstable system? The piece investigates squeezing and tightening as both a generator of movement and as choreographic strategy. The work aims to emanate an urgency and disquiet that drives the performer and viewer towards unexpected openings. Composer and sound artist: Jeff Kolar Performers/dancers: Evie Allison, Madeline Mellinger, Kaitlin Fox Costume designer: Susan Becker

Jazz | Six Time Grammy Winning Jazz Pianist And More

Chucho Valdes, with last year's Jazz Bata 2, "burnishes his stature as a towering Afro-Cuban pianist of our time." (WBGO) He performs along with Cuban percussionist Dafnis Prieto and his electrifying quartet. Chucho Valdes is a Cuban pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger whose career spans over 50 years. An original member of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, in 1973 he founded the group Irakere, one of Cuba's best-known Latin jazz bands. Both his father, Bebo Valdes, and his son, Chuchito, are pianists as well. He has won six Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards. In his review of a Si o Si Quartet performance for The New York Times, Nate Chinen praised Prieto as "a spectacularly proficient Cuban drummer" and hailed his music as "dynamic to the extreme ... a slippery amalgam of complex polyrhythm and incantatory melody."

Performance | The 5X5 Drama Series: 5 Short Plays

The 5X5 Drama Series was founded in 2016 to bring great new plays beyond the footlights and into nontraditional spaces like breweries, rooftops, and taverns to provide an immersive and unique audience experience. The 90-minute program consists of 5 short plays performed by 5 casts and is performed in all 5 boroughs. The series will feature original, commissioned work celebrating the LGBTQ+ community as in remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.
