Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Tour | New York Crime and Punishment Tour

Few people know the true origins of “Law and Order” in New York City. The area known as the Civic Center is full of history – from the noble origins of the first Supreme Court to the deliberation starvation of 2,000 Patriots in the Bridewell Prison – crime and punishment in New York has played out in this square-mile area that houses Manhattan’s courts and prisons. This two-hour tour will show you how a stagnant pond begat the worst slum in the nation where one murder per night was the norm. See a courthouse which took 20 years to build and caused the downfall of the City’s most corrupt politician. Every building tells a story; from the Tombs prison to the Metropolitan Correctional Center – home to such criminals as Bernie Madoff and John Gotti.

Performance | Performance Art: Simultaneous Presence

Bill Dietz invites us to participate in the first of two spatial listening exercises, Hypothetical Non-Attenuating Zuccotti Park Reflection Times. Using real instances from the people’s mic during occupy wall street, Dietz will facilitate a group rehearsal with attendees that translates the time it took for sound to travel between speaker and group into spatial relationships. The exercise will take place both in the gallery and on the street. In the first of a series of three performances, Jen Rosenblit’s improvisational movements in Scenarios for Hovering explore the idea of levitation as a way to understand the body’s relationship to the physical space and other works. She does not claim a space for her performance, but rather looks for ways to be present, to show up and decide, in the moment, how appearing responds to the contents of a space or does not.

Opening Reception | Painting: Ewelina Bochenska's Say that things are structures, Stars before our eyes.

From the artist: “Painting to me is an exhilarating and violent form of thought. I think of the cosmic dust and the origins of it all. I become Prussian blue, violet, shades of grey and black; I paint the abyss and the morning star. My painting practice is a philosophical inquiry about the relationship between the materiality of paint and ambiguity of my brush mark. It is an incessant search for a composition, which evokes a mood that touches one’s deepest sensibilities.”

Concert | Fête de la Musique: - M - / Émilie Simon

Matthieu Chedid is the son of French singer Louis Chedid and the grandson of the Egyptian-born French writer and poetess Andrée Chedid. A talented multi-instrumentalist, Chedid performs and records under the stage name -M-. Created as a means of overcoming his shyness on stage, the pseudonym comes from Chedid's first initial but also refers to the similar sounding French word “aime”, meaning “love”. It's been quite the ride for Émilie Simon since her debut album took off back in 2003. The electronic album was critically acclaimed and went on to become a huge commercial success. Sidestepping her pared-down electronic beginnings, Simon pirouettes her sixth album into fresh, sonic territory with lyrical reveries that sensuously saddle up to lush, organically rich string and brass arrangements.

With on-the-rise Brooklynites HOSPITALITY and TEEN, both riding high on acclaimed sophomore albums released earlier this year.
