Concert | Musica Nuova: Men, Maids and Mischief

Hailed by The New York Times for its “flair for the dramatic and a taste for unusual performance spaces," Musica Nuova brings new perspectives to Baroque music by heightening the dramatic qualities intrinsic to the repertoire. Through staging and storytelling, Musica Nuova weaves storylines based on the meaning of the songs. Men, Maids, and Mischief is an original pastiche of surprisingly dirty songs and catches from English Renaissance and Restoration composers. The NY Times called this staged sketch-comedy show “fast-paced” and “delightful.” Performers: Amanda Keil, mezzo-soprano Brooke Bryant, soprano Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, countertenor Grant Herreid, lute/tenor

Opening Reception | Hiromitsu Kuroo's Relief Constructions

Hiromitsu Kuroo's relief constructions are at once a reinvestigations of western abstraction's possibilities and a development in Japanese origami. Eschewing the tradition of mimesis most often associated with the fold-making art form (representations of cranes, dragons, or butterflies, etc), the artist relishes in the formal autonomy of the fold, with patterned pleats, overlaps, and inversions. Individual geometric shapes formed by the final folds of canvas are painted with saturated acrylics in ways that divide the textured surface into the push and pull elements of figure and ground.

Born in 1978 in Baltimore, Maryland, Souders studied art at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Souders lives and works in New York City.

Author Reading | Claire Bishop discusses her book Radical Museology: Or, What's 'Contemporary' in Museums of Contemporary Art?

New York-based art historian Claire Bishop argues that the incommensurability of fiscal and cultural temporality--one fast, the other slower--points to an alternative world of values in which museums (and by extension, culture, education and democracy in general) are not subject to the banalities of a spreadsheet, but enable us to access a rich and diverse history, to question the present and to realize a different future.
