Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Miriam Mörsel Nathan

Born in the Dominican Republic to parents from the Czech Republic, Mörsel Nathan’s work is a documentation of fragments: “…odd juxtapositions of times and places I did not know and those I did experience. That’s how I saw my world. …It was like always coming in at the middle of a conversation. …The conversation continues and I try to fill in the gaps, putting the fragments of information together to find the story and make it whole. And to keep it from disappearing,” Mörsel Nathan describes her work.

Jazz | Jazz Sounds: Buika / Marques Toliver

Since her introduction to the American marketplace in 2007 with her album Mi Niña Lola (My Little Girl Lola), Buika has experienced a meteoric rise, earning lavish praise from The New York Times, The Miami Herald, and The Wall Street Journal as well as NPR, which quickly included her in their “50 Great Voices” radio gallery. While Marques Toliver seemed to burst onto the scene via the UK with an arresting television performance in 2010, and a declaration from Adele as her “new favorite artist,” his story really began many years ago in Florida. It was there he began his training in classical violinist at the age of 10, and would later enroll in music school. Toliver took a leap of faith and traveled to New York City, where his busking in subways and working as a freelance musician quickly gained him attention from fellow artists.

On this tour you’ll hear tales of the strange eccentric who lived below the tracks and saved them from demise, the curse of a West Side Cowboy who fell to his death from the elevated track, and the children who haunt the street formerly known as Death Avenue. If the moon hangs right perhaps you’ll witness the spectacle of a ghostly ship floating down the Hudson River; is it the long forgotten crew of Henry Hudson’s Half-Moon warning sailors not to go to sea? Or is it Captain Kidd protecting the treasure he buried on Liberty Island? Venture at your own risk through the dark side of High Line.
