Slide Lecture | The Work of Author and Photographer Chester Burger

The publisher Jerry Goodwin will present an illustrated lecture of the work of author and photographer Chester Burger, who shared hidden tales that lie all around us in New York City’s architecture. Mr. Burger was a native New Yorker, who had stories and illustrations about 87 familiar places in New York City -- with an unknown story about each. Some examples include the original of the Lincoln Memorial is in NYC; the stone thing in Washington is a copy, a NYC house in which a President of the US was inaugurated is now a tenement house, with a delicatessen on the ground floor, and John Brown sent a spy from Brooklyn one year before his raid on the Federal Arsenal at harpers Ferry; the spy was hung with Brown and is buried in Brooklyn.

Author Reading | Punk legend Patti Smith reads from her book Woolgathering

In this small, luminous memoir, Patti Smith revisits the most sacred experiences of her early years, with truths so vivid they border on the surreal. The author entwines her childhood self—and its "clear, unspeakable joy"—with memories both real and envisioned from her twenties on New York's MacDougal Street, the street of cafés. Woolgathering was completed in Michigan on Smith's 45th birthday and originally published in a slim volume from Raymond Foye's Hanuman Books. Twenty years later, New Directions has presented it in an augmented edition, featuring writing that was omitted from the book's first printing, along with new photographs and illustrations.

Concert | The Emancipation of Re:Sonance - Five Austrian Masters Revisited

This concert is part of a new series: “The Emancipation of Re:Sonance – Five Austrian Masters Revisited”, which focuses on five of Austria’s most famous composers and the re-interpretation, re-imagination, and re-arrangement of some of their greatest works. The title of the series plays on Arnold Schönberg’s concept of the “Emancipation of Dissonance”. Other events in the series will include performances by Sarah Weaver, Peter Evans and the Wet Ink Ensemble, and Franz Hackl. Arrangements and reconstructions of Mozart’s compositions by Gene Pritsker, Dan Barrett, Dan Cooper, Patrick Grant, John Clark and Milica Paranosic will be perfromed, as well as pieces by composers of various periods, who were directly influenced by Mozart.,/br> The concert will also feature performances of several newly commissioned pieces, that were directly inspired by Mozart's work. The evening will be further enlivened and informed by readings of Mozart's letters and impressions by his contemporaries, as well as by videos and pre-recorded sounds.
