Lecture | Selling is More of a Habit: Women and Drug Trafficking in North America 1900 to 1970

While contemporary analysis and popular culture had depicted “woman as victim” in international narcotics trafficking, new images have emerged. Women have always been part of the drug trade despite their fetishized representations in popular culture. Using specific examples, Elaine Carey discusses how certain women gained financially from the smuggling and peddling of narcotics, and how they were often intimately involved in the planning and execution of the business. Due to historical and economic shifts, women joined men in the creation of chief narcotic ports along the U.S.-Mexican border beginning in the 1910s and 1920s. As the trade expanded, they deployed and employed new forms of technology to supply addicts in the major narcotics hubs of New York City, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Toronto; cities far from Calexico-Mexicali, Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, and Mexico City.

Opening Reception | Leave Everything Behind..., an Exhibition on Forced Migration in Central Europe after World War II

The harassment, depredation, displacement and forced migration of ethnic groups constitute one of the most shameful pages in the history of Europe during the 20th century. Regardless of their age or gender, millions of innocent people were displaced on the basis of a uniformly applied principle of collective guilt in the wake of the Second World War, forcibly dragged from their homes and exiled from their homelands – packing everything into a trunk no heavier than 44 lbs. and ordered to leave everything else behind. Those who lived through this trauma were among the “fortunate” ones who did not end up in the gas chambers of concentration camps or disappear with no trace in the labor camps of the Soviet Union.

Opening Reception | Solo Show: Hideto Imai's Stock Box

This exhibition’s theme was born from the experience of the recent earthquake in Japan. Since the earthquake, Imai has increasingly felt the importance of “daily life.” He recognizes the significance of obtaining “things” and “food” in everyday life. Today we are surrounded by all our necessities and subsequently lose a sense of striving to obtain them. “Stock Box” exists inside the artist’s mind. When Hideto Imai shops for food and daily necessities, he collects his shopping receipts. He burns them into charcoal and dissolves the charcoal into water to create ink. He uses the ink to make drawings; this is a way of leaving traces of how he lives on paper. His geometric images can be interpreted as symbolic, cryptographic messages to his viewers. For Imai, the charcoal is an artifact of the receipts, which are in turn a record of the unfolding of daily life, and the drawings are thus an affirmation of life itself. Imai, born in 1968 in Japan’s Mie Prefecture, has exhibited extensively in Japan and Italy. In 2008, he exhibited in an Onishi Gallery group show, Unity and Isolation, followed by a solo exhibition in 2009 of Daily Life. Imai’s examination of the structure of consumption and daily life is complicated further by his realization of the impermanence of things following the tragic 2011 Japan earthquake. 19 of the 30 pieces in this exhibition were created directly following the earthquake.
