Lecture | Tomorrowland: Space Age Cities of the 1960s

Rosemary Wakeman, a writer in residence and Professor of History at Fordham University and Author of The Heroic City: Paris, 1945-1958, will discuss the space age utopian visions of urban life that emerged in the 1960s. The 1960s was an age of optimism and excitement about the future combined with the threat of atomic destruction. The result was a wild assortment of utopian visions of the city that symbolized both fantasies and fears. These space age reveries were a conflicted landscape of modern ideals and the tensions between architecture, environment and technology.

Gallery Talk | Artist's Tour of It's the Political Economy, Stupid

This is an international group exhibition curated by the Austrian-American team of Oliver Ressler and Gregory Sholette. The title derives from the slogan which in the early 1990s came to define then presidential candidate Bill Clinton’s campaign, “It’s the economy, stupid”. It’s the Political Economy, Stupid brings together a group of artists who focus on the current crisis in a sustained and critical manner. Rather than acquiesce to the current calamity, the artworks, which include videos, photographs, installations, and a commissioned site-specific wall mural, ask whether it is time to push back against the disciplinary dictates of the capitalist logic and, by use of artistic means, launch a rescue of the very notion of the social itself. With artist Linda Bilda.

Discussion | Architectural Explorations in Books

Tom Kundig (of Seattle-based Olson Kundig Architects) redefines the practice of modern architecture. His reverence for place—for both rural and urban landscapes, and their cultural significance—has resulted in work that celebrates site, community and client alike. His early studies in physics and hard sciences led him to develop an interest with the physics of architecture—a perfect union of the rational and the poetic. Drawing upon a deep devotion to craft and the process of making, Kundig’s designs unite nature with man-made materials, transforming steel and concrete into rich tactile experiences. Together, these interests can be found in Tom’s detailing and raw, often kinetic designs, which explore new forms of engagement with site and landscape. Join Tom Kundig and Town & Country executive editor Mark Rozzo as they discuss the role of place, nature, materials and craft in creating Kundig's bold and sensitive designs.

Opening Reception | Painting: Sandro Kopp's There you are

An exhibition by painter Sandro Kopp will feature a series of portraits painted from the artist’s skype-sittings with friends who become his paintings’ subjects. The artist has said of his work, “In exploring these questions – in trying to distill the essence of the difference between these modes of painting – I had the idea of paintings made during video-web-chats: a hybrid of a painting done from life and a painting done from a photograph. Stripping the elements of three-dimensionality and physical presence away, putting a lens (of the webcam) between me and my sitter – but maintaining the elements of time passing and conversation: of engagement.”
