Lecture | Expert Discusses Art, Politics, & Cultural Critique in Chile

Hear a lecture from Professor Bruno Bosteels, who revisits the heated polemic that followed between Nelly Richard and Willy Thayer on the potential links between art, politics, and cultural critique. In 2003, on the thirtieth anniversary of the military coup of September 11, 1973, the Chilean philosopher Willy Thayer published a provocative interpretation of the destruction resulting from the bombing of the Palace of La Moneda in Santiago as a component of the military takeover. This violent political break from Salvador Allende’s rule would mark an anticipation and preemptive deactivation of the poetics of rupture, happening, and event in the Chilean art scene, especially the neo-avant-garde canonized as Escena de la Avanzada (active 1977-1983) in cultural critic Nelly Richard’s book Margins and Institutions: Art in Chile since 1973 (Melbourne, 1987).

Play | Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead: Absurd Comedy Hamlet Spinoff

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is a Shakespearean tragedy turned upside down, inside out, and shaken vigorously.  Minor characters take center stage as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern stumble through Hamlet, on their way to a fate Shakespeare has already written for them. Absurd comedy abounds as the pair of hapless heroes ponder the meaning of life (they don’t figure it out), flip coins (it’s always heads), and struggle to remember which one of them is which (they get it mostly right). Content warning: This play contains imagery of death and suicide, as well as blood. Written by Tom Stoppard. Directed by Devin E. Haqq. Cast: Jesse Cao Long, Pauline Lara, Juan Pablo Caceres, Peyton Turowski, Brandon Pineda-Bayudan, Britni Camacho, Mirza Haas, Ravyn Rochelle, Ronit Kathuria, Caden Sevier, Aaron Tyler, Ciro Saravia, Lance Brown, and Robert Bunn.

Play | Seven in One Blow, or The Brave Little Kid: A Family Play Inspired by The Grimm's Fairy Tale!

" ...(a) genuinely sweet, heart-warming, heart-filling hour of theatre." - NYTheatre.com "...what could be better than a play that asks you to shout? Well, one that asks you to sing..." - The New York Times Adapted from the classic fairy tale by The Brothers Grimm, The Brave Little Tailor. Seven In One Blow, or The Brave Little Kid tells the story of a child living in the city who kills seven flies with a single swat and makes a belt emblazoned with "SEVEN IN ONE BLOW" to commemorate the event. As he is traveling about, most people think his belt refers to seven people and assign the Kid all kinds of difficult tasks based on this faulty presumption. Along the way a few interesting things are learned: an Ogre finds that you don't always have to show how strong you are... sometimes it's okay just to be quiet about it; a girl realizes that when you tease people you are hurting someone who may be just like you; and a scary monster understands that because she is loved, she may not be so scary after all. In the end, the Kid ultimately discovers that a parent's love and care has no bounds..
