Talk | Climate Action: Why Collective Action is the Answer

With wildfires in California, devastating hurricanes across the Atlantic, and record temperatures across the US, climate change is more visible than ever. Despite the billions of dollars in damages and lives lost this last year, the US is moving backward in climate policy. While individual actions can make a difference, systematic change is essential in dealing with the Climate Crisis, especially given its impact on marginalized communities, human health, inequality and the economy. This talk will focus on the why voting is essential, how we can organize our communities, and how we can turn the momentum on climate into a movement to the polls come 2020. Speaker Saad AmerĀ is an environmentalist, activist and the Founder of Plus1Vote, an organization dedicated to improving voter turnout and improving representation in our democracy.

Tour | Bloomingdale Neighborhood Walking Tour

Explore the history of this part of Upper West Side with local historian Jim Mackin. While it is still technically part of the Upper West Side, Manhattan's Bloomingdale District takes its name from its original Dutch settlers. Located between West 96th and West 110th Streets, the Hudson River and Broadway, The Bloomingdale District is an almost-forgotten enclave (and name) in the Upper West Side. Perhaps named for the old Dutch village of Bloemendaal ("valley of flowers"), this neighborhood was once home to the Bloomingdale Insane Asylum. It is likely that the name fell out of disuse to avoid association with the facility. But now, the neighborhood is distinguished enough from the Upper West Side to the south, and Manhattan Valley to the east to warrant its own name - one that hearkens back to its roots, and befitting a scenic, almost "bucolic" city neighborhood.

Opening Reception | Hanukkah in Mea Shearim (Jerusalem): A Holiday Exhibition

A photography exhibition by Agnieszka Traczewska which portrays Hasidic residents of Mea Shearim, in Jerusalem, during festivities of Hanukkah. Jewish culture has been deeply ingrained within Polish society since the Middle Ages. Hasidism, which began in the 18th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, formed the epicenter of the religious, cultural, and social life of Eastern European Jews by the mid-19-century. Tracing this heritage has been the passion of the Polish artist, photographer and filmmaker Traczewska. Her staggeringly beautiful photographic series capture Hasidim travelling to Polish graves of Tzadikim, as well as Hassidic and Orthodox Jewish communities living in the United States and Israel.
