Workshop | The Tao of the Digital Image

Vincent Versace presents his multi-day workshop, featuring 4 days of education (Dec 16-19) based off of his next book: 21s tCentury Composition Theory: The Tao of the Digital Image. Every decision about an image must be and needs to be made at the point of capture. So, the more you understand how it all works, from capture to the final print, the more reflective of the moment that made you click the shutter your images will be. From treating the lens as a brush, the camera a canvas, the monitor as the window to the image, the file as sheet music and the print as the symphony- every choice you make matters. Technique, and the understanding of how it all works, matters. The goal being to have a depth of understanding that makes it so your image does not have to shout to be heard, or in this case seen. It is the best moments of life we choose to capture photographically and they are the moments, if done correctly, that will live on beyond our years.

Performance | Four Dreams: An Artist Talk and Performance

Qingqing Yang’s research focuses on creation through dreams. Her work uses the practice of subconscious painting to evoke a dream-like state in which she is uninhibited to explore the relationship between life, death and love. Her creation takes inspiration from the Four Dreams in Linchuan by the Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu, consisting of four plays about love and society: Peony Pavilion, Purple Hairpin, Handan and Nanke. All four “dreams” are known to be among the most outstanding works of Chinese literature. After an artist talk on Four Dreams in Linchuan, Yang will transition to a performance combining projected visuals, music and her gestural acts of painting. Yang will create an illusionary atmosphere in the theater that allows the audience to feel the experience of entering a poetic dream. Qingqing Yang’s interpretation of the subject is a dreamlike painting performance, setting the stage for a trans-medial conversation between poetry and her calligraphic painting style in the theatrical world of reverie.

Author Reading | The Olivier Sisters: A Biography

From the beginning of their lives, the Olivier sisters stood out: surprisingly emancipated, strikingly beautiful, markedly determined, and alarmingly 'wild'. Rupert Brooke was said to be in love with all four of them; D. H. Lawrence thought they were frankly 'wrong'; Virginia Woolf found them curiously difficult to read. The sisters seemed always to be one step ahead of their time. Margery and Daphne studied at Cambridge when education was still thought by some to be damaging to ovaries. Noel became a doctor; Daphne a pioneering teacher; Margery's promising trajectory was shot down by mental illness; Brynhild, the great beauty of the four, excelled as a Bloomsbury hostess yet gave it up for love and a life of uncertainty. In this intimate, sweeping biography, Sarah Watling brings the sisters in from the margins, tracing lives that span colonial Jamaica, the bucolic life of Victorian progressives, the frantic optimism of Edwardian Cambridge, the bleakness of two world wars, and a host of evolving philosophies for life over the course of the twentieth century.

Author Reading | Titian's Touch: Art, Magic and Philosophy

At the end of his long, prolific life, Titian was rumored to paint directly on the canvas with his bare hands. He would slide his fingers across bright ridges of oil paint, loosening the colors, blending, blurring, and then bringing them together again. With nothing more than the stroke of a thumb or the flick of a nail, Titian's touch brought the world to life. With author Maria H. Loh.

Play | Clybourne Park: Scathing Satire

An often scathing, intentionally offensive satire about racism and social change, this multi-award-winning play explodes in two outrageous acts set fifty years apart. Trapped in a societal purgatory of ineptitude and anxiety, the first act takes place in a recently sold house in a white middle-class neighborhood of Chicago in 1959. The second act is set in 2009 in the same house, recently re-sold, now in a predominantly African-American neighborhood facing gentrification. A studnt production. Written by Bruce Norris.
