Discussion | Behind the Screens: Black Women in Social Media

What do Paper Magazine, Glossier, Into The Gloss, and The Cut’s Instagram accounts all have in common, other than having an instantly recognizable brand voice and the follower count of small countries? Their team leads are Black women. The irony, of course, is that the individuals running and maintaining some of the world’s most beloved and followed social media accounts are the same people who are not only underrepresented, but also work habitually for recognition by society at large. The panel will comprise of conversations moderated by Siraad Dirshe and Utibe Mbagwu (social manager for Glossier + Into The Gloss) about the phenomenon of women of color working in social media, insights about what working in social media entails, and what panelists think a social media career will look like in the years to come.

Play | Measure for Measure: An Adaptation of Shakespeare's Classic Comedy

Temporarily left in charge by the Duke, the upright and uptight Lord Angelo has decided to crack down on the city's debauchery, arresting young Claudio for impregnating his fiancee Juliet before their wedding. When virtuous Isabella, Claudio's sister, hears of his death sentence, she begs Lord Angelo for mercy. But hypocritical Angelo propositions her instead, leaving Isabella with an impossible choice: save her soul or her brother's life. In this timely production, lovers and leaders in disguise reveal how those in power take advantage of those without it - asking the question, can the law be both just and merciful? The all-black women cast features Jasmine Batchelor (Isabella), Nora Carroll (Escalus/Juliet), Toccarra Cash (Lucio), Alfie Fuller (Pompey), Adrian Kiser (Angelo), Gabrielle Murphy (Provost), Jacqueline Nwabueze (Understudy), Latonia Phipps (Mariana/Overdone), and Grace Porter (Duke).

Classical Music | Bach Vespers: Schwingt Freudig Euch Empor

Wen Yang, conductor. The chuch cantata Schwingt freudig euch empor BWV 36 was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1731. He drew on material from previous congratulatory cantatas, beginning with Schwingt freudig euch empor, BWV 36c (1725). The Gospel for the Sunday was the Entry into Jerusalem, thus the mood of the secular work matched "the people's jubilant shouts of Hosanna". In a unique structure in Bach's cantatas, he interpolated four movements derived from the former works with four stanzas from two important Advent hymns, to add liturgical focus, three from Luther's Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland and one from Nicolai's Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern.
