Other | Ice Carving: Kasparaov vs. IBM Deep Blue Chess Match


A live ice carving of giant chess pieces reproducing the legendary 1996 chess match in which chess master Gary Kasparov was defeated by IBM’s Deep Blue computer. Renowned ice-sculpting collective Okamoto Studios will transform four blocks of ice into giant chess pieces, which will become part of a fourteen-piece replica of Gary Kasparov’s 1996 defeat by IBM’s Deep Blue – the first time a chess-playing computer outmaneuvered a reigning world champion. Audiences will be able to stroll among the frozen pieces starting at 8:00 a.m. the next morning, and lunchtime visitors will be invited to warm up with free hot cocoa and holiday treats while enjoying a foot-stomping live performance by the Hungry March Band, NYC's legendary street brass march band.
