Discussion | Writer Lee Smith discusses her work

At the age of nine, Lee Smith began selling her stories for a nickel apiece in her hometown, the coal-mining town of Grundy, Virginia. Since then, her novels and short stories have mapped their territory—the Appalachian Mountains of distant history and the present day, hauntings and curses along with modern forms of desire, success and failure—in their own unique language. They include Black Mountain Breakdown (1981); Fair and Tender Ladies (1988); the luminous country music saga The Devil’s Dream (1992); the harrowing Saving Grace (1995), set in the milieu of snake-handling fundamentalist churches; The Last Girls (2003); On Agate Hill (2006); and the short story collection Mrs. Darcy and the Blue-Eyed Stranger (2010).

Encapsulating two distinct cultures in pivotal moments of societal transition, Sander and Keïta's portraits reflect on the experience and role of the individual in Germany and Mali. Author Reading | Bradford Morrow discusses his book The Uninnocent

The Uninnocent gathers, for the first time, a collection of Bradford Morrow's finest, gothic tales. A young man whose childhood hobby of collecting sea shells and birds' nests takes a sinister turn when he becomes obsessed with acquiring his brother's girlfriend, in "The Hoarder" (selected as one of the Best American Noir Stories of the Century). An archeologist summoned to attend his beloved sister's funeral is astonished to discover it is not she who has died, but someone much closer to him, in "Gardener of Heart." A blind motivational speaker has a crisis of faith when he suddenly regains his sight, only to discover life was better lived in the dark, in "Amazing Grace." In all of these stories, readers will find themselves enthralled and captivated by one of the most potent voices in contemporary American fiction.

Author Reading | Paul La Farge reads from his book Luminous Airplanes

A decade after the publication of Haussmann, or the Distinction, his acclaimed novel about nineteenth–century Paris, Paul La Farge turns his imagination to America at the dawn of the twenty–first century. Luminous Airplanes has a singular form: the novel, complete in itself, is accompanied by an online “immersive text,” which continues the story and complements it. La Farge’s ambitious new work considers large worlds and small ones, love, memory, family, flying machines, dance music, and the end of the world.

Theater | Paul Zindel's The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, a Mother-Daughter Tug of War

Frowsy, acid-tongued Beatrice Hunsdorfer wreaks petty vengeance on everybody around her. Her elder daughter, Ruth, is a pretty, high-strung girl subject to convulsions; her younger daughter, Tillie, plain and almost pathologically shy, has a gift for science. Encouraged by her teacher, Tillie undertakes an experiment that wins a prize at her high school—and also brings on the shattering climax of the play. Both proud and envious of her daughter, Beatrice can only strike out when she needs to love and deride when she wants to praise. She is a victim as much of her own nature as of her cruel lot. And yet, as Tillie’s experiment proves, something beautiful and full of promise can emerge from even the most barren soil. That is the timeless lesson of the play and the root of its power and truth.
