Conference | Urban Thinkers Campus: The City We Need

According to UN Reports the world will receive 2.5 billion more people in the next 30 years. Due to rapid urbanization a majority of these people will be urban dwellers' who will have to cope with the rapidly changing weather patterns. These trends combined with rural to urban migration of existing populations and the fact that 1/3 of the world's urban population lives in slums emphasizes the urgent need for high quality urban design and planning along with securing its implementation. The Urban Thinkers Campus is a special initiative of the World Urban Campaign and UN-Habitat, the UN agency focused on urbanization, to gather ideas from people around the world who are passionate about the future of cities. It is an initiative meant to emulate and build consensus between partners engaged in addressing urbanization challenges and proposing solutions for urban futures. Twenty-nine Urban Thinker Campuses are planned in over a dozen countries on five continents, and the New York City edition is one of only two in the U.S. The organizers of the New York City Urban Thinkers Campus representing esteemed New York-based institutions have worked diligently to create a conference that is more than business as usual. This conference seeks to educate and engage multiple audiences to facilitate a critical discussion about where our cities have been, where they are and where they need to be. Your input and the input of the Twenty-eight other UTC’s will form the backbone of the New Urban Agenda, the outcome of Habitat III that will guide global thinking on urbanization for the next twenty years. Habitat III itself will take place in Quito, Ecuador in October 2016 (and will be the first implementation conference following the expected climate change framework to result from COP21 in Paris.)

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. This tour takes place Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am and Mondays and Fridays at 2pm.

Screening | Documentary Work-in-Progress on the Democratic Republic of Congo

In Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, an elected member of parliament strives to gain the support of his poor, rural constituents while pursuing his own individualistic ambitions. In the DRC, where tribalism defines social hierarchies and state service is the dominant form of wealth creation; corruption becomes the rule rather than the exception, ensnaring even the most fervent idealists. Bana Congo Oyez! presents the everyday reality of the DRC's dysfunctional leadership through the barnstorming, sloganeering election campaign of an idealistic congressman. It's a rare glimpse into the relationship between voters and the elected representatives of a state corroded by systemic corruption. Can a politician be elected without being tainted by that corruption? 75 min. Followed by Q+A with the filmmakers Patrick Flynn and Natacha Ikoli.

Screening | Documentary: Kristof Bilsen's Elephant's Dream (2014)

The story of a group of public sector workers who live in the third largest city in Africa, Kinshasa, DR Congo, where the weight of history has not stopped them from pursuing their hopes and dreams. The film takes us beyond the usual reports of the Congo, providing poetic and compassionate insight into a country in transition, as seen through the microcosm of three state-owned institutions: a rail station, the central post office and the only existing fire station in Kinshasa. At times surreal, at times hopeful, this film reveals a surprising perspective on lives lived beyond chaos. 72 min.
