Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tour | Chelsea and the High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to city markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the city to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park. This tour takes place Monday and Fridays at 6pm.

Lecture | Poggio Civitate, an Ancient Etruscan Settlement That Was Home to Nobles

Dr. Erik Nielsen of Franklin University will present this lecture on Poggio Civitate, an ancient Etruscan settlement located near Siena, in Tuscany. The site of Poggio Civitate was the home to an elite stratum of Etruscan nobles who clearly controlled the area from their strategic position on the top of this dominant hill. The excavations carried out there over the past 49 years by a cadre of international scholars and students, both graduate and undergraduate, have brought to light the substantial remains of a monumental structure dating to the 6th century BCE.

Author Reading | Alison Bass reads from her book Getting Screwed: Sex Workers and the Law

Alison Bass will be joined by Julie XXXX, a madam profiled in the book. The author will share the latest research on prostitution and will discuss how sex workers navigate a culture that accepts the implicit exchange of sex for money or status, but punishes those who make such bargains explicitly. Drawing on studies that show lower rates of violence and STDs in regions where adult prostitution is legal and regulated, Bass makes a powerful case for decriminalizing sex work.

Author Reading | Ian W. Toll discusses his book The Conquering Tide: War in the Pacific Islands, 1942-1944

The devastation of Pearl Harbor was a prelude to a greater challenge: rolling back the vast Japanese Pacific empire, island by island. Author Ian W. Toll's narrative encompasses the heart of the Pacific War---the period between mid-1942 and mid-1944---when parallel Allied counteroffensives north and south of the equator washed over Japan's far-flung island empire like a "conquering tide."

Discussion | Why Art Is Important in Rural Communities

Rural areas around the globe are searching for ways to survive in a changing world. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the collapse of the 400-year-old cod fishing industry has threatened the economic and cultural viability of most rural communities. Since 2008, Fogo Island Arts has been bringing international attention to the area by organizing residencies and projects involving leading artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, curators, designers, and scholars working at the intersections of art, heritage, and social enterprise. Program founder Zita Cobb and Nicolaus Schafhausen, director of Kunsthalle Wien and the strategic advisor of Fogo Island Arts, talk with Andria Hickey, curator at New York City’s Public Art Fund, about the possibilities and challenges of art in rural communities.
