Workshop | Morning Tai Chi


A free weekly drop-in Tai Chi class on Friday mornings from May through October. The sights and sounds of the Hudson River provide an ideal backdrop for focusing and exercising the body and mind. Instructor Alex Hing will lead the group through gentle physical exercises and stretching. Tai Chi is a low impact exercise form practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that the body is in constant motion. It is an excellent choice of exercise for people of all ages.

This symposium will mark the publication of Keywords for Disability Studies, a collection of 60 essays that identify and define key terms in the field. An evening artists’ panel on October 1 featuring Sunaura Taylor, Riva Lehrer, and Park McArthur will address the topic of “Keywords for Disability Culture.” On October 2, speakers Eva Feder Kittay, G. Thomas Couser, Heather Love, Mara Mills, Elizabeth Emens, Lennard Davis, Robert McRuer, Katherine Ott, Faye Ginsberg, Rayna Rapp, Sayantani DasGupta and others will discuss their terms and identify key questions for the next stage of disability studies scholarship. Colloquium | An Evening with the Gulf Labor Artist Coalition


In 2009, Human Rights Watch published a report detailing alarming labor conditions and human rights violations on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi where a new Guggenheim Museum was to be built, one of several international cultural institutions. In response, several dozen artists, curators and cultural producers launched the Gulf Labor Artist Coalition with the intention of protect the rights of the migrant workers during the construction of museums on Saadiyat Island. Among various initiatives – public programs, exhibitions such as participation in this year's Venice Biennale, the artist platform 52 Weeks, and research trips to the Emirates but also the countries where some of the workers come from – most recently, Gulf Labor's protest has taken the form of a publication, The Gulf: High Culture/Hard Labor. This event features reports by Gulf Labor members Nitasha Dhillon, Mariam Ghani, Amin Husain, Andrew Ross and Gregory Sholette and focuses on the repercussions in the art world of oppressive labor policies in art institutions. On the occasion of the release of their book, The Gulf: High Culture/Hard Labor, they expand on the most recent research and its implication for the work of artists and cultural producers everywhere. Program Beethoven (1770 - 1827) Symphony No. 8 (1812) Sibelius (1865 - 1957) Violin Concerto (1904) About the Performers The Gateway Orchestra is a professional orchestra of 80 plus musicians, including the former members of the New York Philharmonic. The orchestra is a member of the League of American Orchestras. Conductor Ms. Angland has been described in reviews as "thrilling," "compelling" (Greenwich Time), "a revelation," "unforgettable," and "amazing" (The Italian Voice). Prior her involvement with the Gateway Orchestra, Ms. Angland assistant conducted with the New York Grand Opera for seven years for numerous operas and concerts in Central Park and Carnegie Hall. Violinist Xiao Wang has performed with orchestras like the National Orchestra of Belgium, Kodaly Philharmonic Orchestra in Hungary, Gewandhaus Academisches Orchester in Leipzig, Germany, the Texas Music Festival Orchestra and others. He was quoted by the New York Times as “… wonderfully clean in Sibelius, and he made the most of its expressive opportunities.” He was the first prize winner of the Szigeti International Violin Competition and laureate of the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Competition. About the Program Beethoven’s 8th Symphony provides a welcomed antithesis to the raw emotion of the concerto as it depicts joy at its most fervent. The composer fondly referred to it as "my little Symphony in F," distinguishing it from his Sixth Symphony, a longer work also in F. Sibelius' Violin Concerto was written in 1904 and revised in 1905. It was premiered with Richard Strauss conducting the Berlin Court Orchestra and "wunderkind" Ferenc von Vecsey as soloist who was only 13 at a time, although he could not adequately cope with the extraordinary technical demands of the work.
