Talk | The Tree of Knowledge: Celebrating the Roots of Humanism

With: Hugh Taft Morales. A growing number of people today describe themselves as “spiritual but not religious.” They yearn for something more than mundane experiences of every day life, but without the trappings of dogma and bureaucracy. Hugh Taft-Morales explores ways humanists could best approach the word “spiritual.” Is it a danger to reason because, as the founder of Ethical Culture Felix Adler said, it is often “a synonym of muddy thought and misty emotionalism?” Or can naturalistic forms of spirituality found in Spinoza, John Dewey, and Carl Sagan enliven humanism today? How might humanist spirituality help us make progress on, to quote David Brooks, the “road to character?”

Concert | The Ebony Hillbillies, Rootsy String Band

As one of the last black string bands in the U.S. - currently based in the concrete hills of NYC - The Ebony Hillbillies keep an important legacy alive with a rootsy, homegrown style that many forget was a key element in the genesis of all the music cherished as uniquely American: jazz, blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, rock and roll and country. The EH are led by Henrique Prince (fiddle, vocals) and Norris Bennett (banjo, mountain dulcimer, guitar, vocals) and feature Gloria Thomas Gassaway on vocals and bones, William "Salty Bill" Salter on acoustic bass with A.R. and Newman Taylor Baker on washboard and percussion.

Jazz | The Charlie Parker Jazz Festival

Joe Lovano - Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano stands alone at the vanguard of large and small group jazz. In 2015 alone, two major ensembles will be on display: Joe Lovano’s Village Rhythms Band – a natural extension of the tenor giant’s evolving body of work where West African influences and party atmospheres connect New York City and Lagos, and the acclaimed Wayne Shorter-influenced Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas Quintet: Sound Prints. Rudresh Mahanthappa - Few musicians share the ability of alto saxophonist/composer Rudresh Mahanthappa to embody the expansive possibilities of his music with his culture. What has materialized is a sound that hybridizes progressive jazz and South Indian classical music in a fluid and forward-looking form that reflects Mahanthappa’s own experience growing up a second-generation Indian-American. The current manifestations of that trajectory include his latest project Bird Calls, which issued its first release in February 2015. Mahanthappa has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and numerous commissions. Myra Melford - Pianist, composer and Guggenheim fellow Myra Melford draws inspiration from a vast spectrum of cultural and spiritual traditions and artistic disciplines. In 2013, she released her first solo recording, Life Carries Me This Way and premiered Language of Dreams, her most ambitious project to date, combining narration, dance, and video with music for her quintet, Snowy Egret, which has a new release out in March 2015 (Enja/Yellowbird). Michael Mwenso - Jazz vocalist and bandleader Michael Mwenso is a fixture of the Uptown jazz scene but is making his way downtown with his signature style and vocal chops. From a young age, the Sierra Leone-born singer has held his own with artists like James Brown in addition to playing and leading his own bands around the world.

Concert | Live Music Sunday: David Pollack / Jafé Paulino

NYC native David Pollack combines influences such as Weezer, James Taylor and Jenny Lewis to create a smooth hooky indie pop sound pleasant to the ear. With a full length already under his belt, Pollack is releasing a new EP titled When The Light Turns Blue. Quazimodo Jones is the inevitable evolution of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jafé Paulino. As a founding member and lead singer of New York City's blues rock/reggae trio, VIVA MAYDAY, Jafé and co-founder Gian Stone created a unique and distinguishable sound from 2007-2013 while earning a buzz in the scene for their highly energetic live performances, opening up for legendary acts Living Colour, Dead Prez, Das EFX, Styles P, Dawn Penn, and The Burnt Sugar Arkestra Chamber. After a long hiatus intertwined with further soul searching, Jafé took on the persona of Mr. Jones as a means to share his journey of spirit vs. ego in the modern world.
