From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Jazz | 7th Annual Stan Michels Memorial Jazz Concert

This seventh annual memorial jazz concert will be performed by local impresario Marjorie Eliot and her ensemble. The jazz is hot and the setting is cool, underneath the majestic elms on the promenade alongside a beautiful garden and overlooking the Hudson River. Stan Michels represented Northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants, for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, for the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places, and unreasonable noise. He also was a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district.

Dance Performance | Dance Artists: Garth Fagan Dance / Carmen de Lavallade: The Creation / The Ebony Ecumenical Ensemble

Garth Fagan’s ever-evolving dance language draws on the weight of modern dance, the speed and precision of ballet, the energy of Afro-Caribbean dance, and the rule-breaking experimentation of the post-moderns. These elements intertwine not only in the well-loved signature pieces he will be performing, but also in a commissioned work that pays homage to Geoffrey Holder’s illustrious legacy. To further celebrate his spirit, Holder’s widow, Carmen de Lavallade, will perform his moving rendition of the story of creation based on a James Weldon Johnson poem suggesting life’s graceful cycle. Harlem’s spirit-filled Ebony Ecumenical Ensemble opens the evening with their powerful gospel voices, celebrating African American musical heritage.

Concert | Taylor Mac: The 20th Century Abridged

“Fabulousness can come in many forms, and TAYLOR MAC seems intent on assuming each and every one of them.” (NY Times) The inimitable Mac, “one of the most exciting theater artists of our time,” (TimeOut NY) has for the last 18 years created internationally award-winning performance events that at once provoke and embrace his diverse audience — shows in which he “doesn’t just defy categorization; he makes the categories themselves seem irrelevant.” (Time Out NY). Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music is his most ambitious project to date, a subjective history of the 240 years since America’s founding told through the music of the times. He’ll present a supercharged slice of this project: a politically-knowing, enormous of spirit, and outrageously entertaining romp through 100 years of culture as seen through songs that range from Tin Pan Alley to the birth of rock ‘n’ roll to disco and beyond. Special guests include the BROOKLYN UNITED MARCHING BAND, a gaggle of burlesque dancers, and maybe a few surprises. A Taylor Mac show is like nothing you’ve ever witnessed: “Startlingly unique…a must see for anyone who wants to see a kinder, gentler society.” (Huffington Post)

Young Dancemakers Company will present an ensemble of talented, ethnically diverse high school dancer/choreographers, who will showcase their original choreography. The teens' original dances, which range from solos to group works, are created under the experienced eye of veteran director Alice Teirstein, who founded YDC 20 years ago, and music director William Catanzaro. The event ends with the lively "Dance With Us," in which audience members with dancing feet are invited onto the stage to improvise with the dancers, accompanied by percussionist Catanzaro.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: Macbeth

The Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot became a treasured urban tradition in two decades of productions. The concept of free Shakespeare in a parking lot, presented with a "poor theater" aesthetic, is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. Set in Scotland, Macbeth dramatizes the corrosive psychological and political effects produced when evil is chosen as a way to fulfill the ambition for power.
