From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Screening | Rockin' the Roach: 4 Silent Shorts from the Hal Roach Studios

A recurring and at times, overarching theme in Roach comedies were guys finding themselves in a desperate, mounting pickle - usually with or because of members of the opposite sex. Clever variations on this old chestnut raised this to a high art - while managing to largely disarm any sexism, thanks to deft writing, direction and casting. Here are four gems of unmitigated hilarity: Tyler Brooke and James Finlayson in DIZZY DADDIES (1926) Tyler Brooke and James Finlayson in SHOULD HUSBANDS PAY? (1926) Laurel and Hardy and James Finlayson in SUGAR DADDIES (1927) Laurel and Hardy in WE FAW DOWN (1928) Live piano accompaniment for all films by Ben Model.

Concert | 30th Anniversary DJ Celebration: Quantic / Gilles Peterson / Afrika Bambaataa

Quantic, aka Will Holland is a British born musician, producer and DJ making soul, electronic & Latin music saturated in the tropical soundwaves of the Caribbean. Holland has developed a sound that bridges heritage and progression, marrying spontaneous musicianship with deep, exciting tonality. When all is said and done, whichever role Gilles Peterson is performing – DJ, broadcaster, producer, compiler, label boss, or plain old record collector – the music is always the bottom line. His passion and enthusiasm is unfailing and deeply infectious. Starting off life as a club DJ, Peterson continues to spin passionately in venues around the world. As for the radio, his new 3-hour Saturday afternoon show on BBC Radio 6 Music has seen him take his unique musical mix to a new and growing audience of music lovers whilst the syndicated Worldwide radio show continues to spread his musical gospel. Afrika Bambaataa is one of the three main originators of break-beat deejaying, and is respectfully known as the “Grandfather,” “Godfather,” and “The Amen Ra,” of Hip Hop Culture as well as The Father of The Electro Funk Sound. Through his co-opting of the street gang the Black Spades into the music and culture-oriented Zulu Nation, he is responsible for spreading rap and Hip-Hop culture throughout the world.

Concert | Rock Sounds: tUnE-yArDs / Shabazz Palaces

The season closes on an ecstatically high note with the one-of-a-kind tUnE-yArDs, project of New England native Merrill Garbus who has been called everything from “righteous with a carnival kick,” (NY Times) to “idiosyncratic, high-stakes and empowering.” (Pitchfork) Her 2011 record Whokill is hailed as a modern classic, with a lo-fi tapestry of beats, guitars, and horns weaving around her unmistakable, fearlessly belting voice. After three years of touring she returned last May with her follow-up Nikki Nack, which casts her songwriting and voice in a candied indie pop setting, complete with a Seussian stage setup and costumes. Pitchfork praises the record for its “songs that sound like playgrounds full of street kids ricocheting off each other like bumper cars.” Garbus is a genuine tour de force and possesses the rare combination of wicked braininess with complete warmth and lack of pretense. The “free associative, raw and radical” (LA Times) experimental hip-hop duo SHABBAZZ PALACES rounds out the bill. After emerging a few years ago in a cloud of mystery, they have come to stand for a woozy, patchwork, and altogether intoxicating approach to beat-making. Together, they threaten to make this the NYC show of the summer.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: Macbeth

The Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot became a treasured urban tradition in two decades of productions. The concept of free Shakespeare in a parking lot, presented with a "poor theater" aesthetic, is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. Set in Scotland, Macbeth dramatizes the corrosive psychological and political effects produced when evil is chosen as a way to fulfill the ambition for power.
