Concert | Pop and Soul: Glass Animals / Taylor McFerrin / BattleFest League Dancers

Glass Animals vocalist and songwriter David Bayley draws influence for both music and artwork from his involvement in the world of medicine and neuroscience (at just 22 years old, he has studied both) creating a sound with it’s roots spread between the electronic and live instrumentation. The result is the warm, narcotic space between a downbeat, slow-burning groove and electro-pop catchiness. Brooklyn-based producer, composer, pianist, DJ and live musician Taylor McFerrin released his first full length LP, Early Riser, in June 2014 on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder record label. Taylor’s musical style is equally influenced by the legends of 60s/70s Soul, the kings of the Modern Beat Generation, Golden Era hip hop, free form jazz and electronic music. By playing all of the instruments on his productions, while also relying heavily on sampling and chopping up his live takes, he has found a sound that seamlessly bridges myriad musical worlds and draws the listener into a constantly shifting audio soundscape. Brooklyn’s own extreme dance league, BattleFest, brings its best dancers out for a live performance. “Flex” dancing as it’s known, involves dance battle competitions that are at once flights of fancy as well as poetic evocations of the streets.

Concert | Invincible: Michael Jackson Tribute

Invincible is a live multi-media spectacular with performances of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits including, “Thriller,” “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” “Man In the Mirror” and many more. The show features talented artists who can sing live while also executing the intense dancing that the King of Pop was so famous for. This show captures the spirit and essence of watching and listening to Michael Jackson perform live onstage like no other! Don’t miss the “Dance Like Michael” workshop prior to the performance. Also: Bottom Heavy instantly established itself as a strong new sound; flowing freely between funky instrumentals, dreamy lullabies in soul and blues inflected songs. Marika Hughes fronts the band with such ease and so naturally it makes one wonder why cellos haven’t always fronted bands. Her stylings are reminiscent of her classical upbringing yet defy expectation as she moves us with her supple vocals through jazz, funk, soul, rock, and back again. The band can tip its hat to some of our greatest artists as influences; Gil-Scott Heron, Roberta Flack, Don Pullen, Charles Mingus and Cassandra Wilson, The Staple Singers, to name only a few. As you are charmed by her cello, her voice, and her band, you will be charmed by Marika herself: fiercely authentic, her audience an old friend invited along for the fabulous ride.

Opening Reception | Swain's Misassembled: A Wearable Sculpture Exhibit

New York artist Swain plays with concepts of identity, imperfection and beauty in her upcoming exhibit. Through statement accessories and site-specific installations, the work subverts traditional fashion and decor. Fascinated by the collision of order and fluidity in nature, her work is informed by both organic and mathematical design. Contextualized against the human body, the sculptures highlight the contradiction between the malleable living form and the scientific way of understanding it.

Titus Andronicus is famously Shakespeare’s bloodiest play with the highest body count and the Warehouse does “blood” very well. General Titus Andronicus returns to Rome with the Goth Queen Tamora. Concert | The Felix Hernandez Rhythm Revue

In 1983, Felix Hernandez began a two-year project traveling the U.S. collecting hundreds of hours of interviews with R&B artists. The material was used for a 13-part radio documentary called Harlem Hit Parade, which was syndicated to 70 NPR stations in the mid-80’s. In 1986, Felix introduced Rhythm Revue, New York’s first radio show devoted exclusively to classic soul and R&B. It premiered on WBGO and is now in its 29th year. In 1989, Felix was awarded the first of many production grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Arts, to develop and produce a weekly radio presentation of live blues and R&B. In 1991, Felix did his first Rhythm Revue Dance Party at Tramps in New York City. The party outgrew Tramps and moved to the Roseland Ballroom in 1992, where it was held for over two decades. Felix’s unique mix of classic soul, disco and funk consistently draws a crowd of 2,500 to 3,500 dancers per event. Also: Anchored on the Fania All Stars’ historic performance at the Cheetah Club on the evening of August 26, 1971, Our Latin Thing captures the New York salsa explosion of the ‘70s in all its power and passion. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Leon Gast, the movie features performances from Cheo Feliciano, Héctor Lavoe, Ismael Miranda, Adalberto Santiago and Pete ‘El Conde’ Rodríguez. Gast also takes to the streets of Spanish Harlem where the Salsa phenomenon was born, and brings viewers behind the scenes and into the recording studio for a peek into the creative process with producer/keyboardist Larry Harlow.

The skeletal remains of the High Line’s elevated tracks set the perfect scene for a spooky evening. Join a journey to the creepier side of New York City’s most unique park. If the moon hangs right perhaps you’ll witness the spectacle of a ghostly ship floating down the Hudson River; is it the long forgotten crew of Henry Hudson’s Half-Moon warning sailors not to go to sea? Or is it Captain Kidd protecting the treasure he buried on Liberty Island? Venture at your own risk through the dark side of High Line.
