Concert | Dance and Soul: Caribou / Sinkane

Having followed up his Polaris Prize-winning 2007 record Andorra with the universally adored Swim in 2010, Dan Snaith has spent the intervening five years touring the world, bringing not only the sounds of Caribou to the stage but proving his immeasurable worth as a DJ with epic 7½-hour-long sets. In 2012, Caribou were personally invited to join Radiohead on the road while Dan released his first album under the guise of his dancefloor-loving pseudonym Daphni to widespread critical acclaim. Sinkane - It’s soul music! And truly universal; uniting rhythm and styles from our world over to help you move, relate and be, Sinkane’s latest album, Mean Love, rolls like an emotional, existential history of the artist. Co-produced with long-time Sinkane collaborator and childhood friend Greg Lofaro, Ahmed Gallab has created an altogether unique compound of sound, stylistically nostalgic and ultramodern at the same time.

The skeletal remains of the High Line’s elevated tracks set the perfect scene for a spooky evening. Join a journey to the creepier side of New York City’s most unique park. If the moon hangs right perhaps you’ll witness the spectacle of a ghostly ship floating down the Hudson River; is it the long forgotten crew of Henry Hudson’s Half-Moon warning sailors not to go to sea? Or is it Captain Kidd protecting the treasure he buried on Liberty Island? Venture at your own risk through the dark side of High Line.

Dance Performance | LeeSaar The Company, Ohad Naharin and Guest Dancers from Batsheva Dance Company

Founded in Tel Aviv by Lee Sher and Saar Harari in 2000 and now based in NYC, LEESAAR is “a gutsy, brainy modern-dance troupe” (NY Times) with a highly theatrical approach. Props, costumes, and pantomime punctuate their Gaga-inspired movement to form a delightful brand of avant-garde. In recent program notes, Sher and Hariri wrote, “by seeking the extreme within ourselves we hope to expand our limits for a fresh experience.” In their new piece Grass and Jackals, they find these extremes in an imagined state of nature. Set against a kaleidoscopic moiré backdrop, the work “transforms the dancers—seven women, clad in gleaming black bodysuits—into exotic, fluidly moving creatures, sexual and fierce.” (New Yorker) The program also includes a duet by their greatest influence and one of the most brilliant living choreographers, Israeli visionary OHAD NAHARIN, performed by guest dancers from his BATSHEVA DANCE COMPANY. Naharin developed the Gaga technique with Batsheva in the 90s and has continued to build and refine its vocabulary over three decades.

Screening | Reviewing Renewal: Short Films

New York City began to adopt “urban renewal plans” in 1949 to get federal funding to acquire land, relocate the people living there, demolish the structures and make way for new public and private development. The legacy of these neighborhood master plans remains active across the city. Even after federal funding for the program was cut in 1974, New York City continued to adopt renewal plans for neighborhoods. Urban renewal transforms the city, and changes the lives of many New Yorkers, for better or worse. What can we learn from the continuing story of urban renewal in NYC? Films: REZONING HARLEM THE RINK

Theater | Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: Macbeth

The Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot became a treasured urban tradition in two decades of productions. The concept of free Shakespeare in a parking lot, presented with a "poor theater" aesthetic, is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. Set in Scotland, Macbeth dramatizes the corrosive psychological and political effects produced when evil is chosen as a way to fulfill the ambition for power.
