Film | Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps (1935): Classic Spy Thriller Film

The 39 Steps follows Richard Hannay as he stumbles upon a conspiracy that thrusts him into a hectic chase across the Scottish moors—a chase in which he is both the pursuer and the pursued—as well as into an unexpected romance with the cool Pamela. Adapted from a novel by John Buchan, this classic wrong-man thriller from the Master of Suspense anticipates the director’s most famous works (especially North by Northwest), and remains one of his cleverest and most entertaining films. Director: Alfred Hitchcock Cast: Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll, Lucie Mannheim, Godfrey Tearle Alfred Hitchcock was an English filmmaker who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema. In a career spanning six decades, he directed over 50 feature films, many of which are still widely watched and studied today. Known as the "Master of Suspense," he became as famous as any of his actors thanks to his many interviews, his cameo roles in most of his films, and his hosting and producing the television anthology Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955-65). His films garnered 46 Academy Award nominations, including six wins, although he never won the award for Best Director despite five nominations.

Gallery Talk | Expert Talks about Famous Japanese Art by Katsushika Hokusai

Educator Eleanor K. Sypher will teach attendees about a selection from Katsushika Hokusai's “Views of Mount Fuji” among other works; then show his influence on French Impressionist artists. Knowledge of Hokusai’s prints in the West was among the first to reach Europe in the mid 1800s. His recognition now is mostly confined to “The Great Wave” from his “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.” Over his almost 90 years, he created images of Kabuki actors, courtesans, the peopled landscapes of Japan: plains, seashores, waterfalls, and mountains.
