Trinity's organist, Avi Stein, will lead Trinity Baroque Orchestra in J.S. Bach's Organ Concerto in D Minor -- a reconstruction of a lost concerto, based on the dazzling D Minor Harpsichord Concerto and movements from various cantatas. Also included is one of Bach's grand odes to the dance: Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C Major, which embraces the splendors of the court of Versailles that had radiated throughout Europe.

Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his films were nearly all adaptations of novels or short stories, spanning a number of genres and gaining recognition for their intense attention to detail, innovative cinematography, extensive set design, and dark humor. While many of Kubrick's films were controversial and initially received mixed reviews upon release, most were nominated for Academy Awards, Golden Globes, or BAFTA Awards, and underwent critical re-evaluations.

Every map of the world faces a problem: how do you flatten the globe without distorting it? Conformal maps offer an elegant solution -- they preserve shape locally, so that, when you zoom in far enough, features on the map appear just as they do in reality. Developed by mathematicians in the nineteenth century, the notion of conformality has turned out to be far more than a cartographic curiosity; it helps us understand beautiful artwork and has found surprising scientific applications ranging from the study of electricity to the design of airplane wings. Join Fields Medalist Akshay Venkatesh for a journey through history, art, and science as he introduces the mathematics of conformal mapping.

In August of 1857, weeks after Charles Baudelaire published his famous volume of poetry, Les Fleurs du Mal, a French court banned six poems from its contents on grounds that they would “necessarily lead to the excitement of the senses by a crude realism offensive to public decency.” They include “Lesbos,” “Femmes damnés” / Damned Women, “Le Léthé” / Lethe, “À celle qui est trop gaie” / To One Who is Too Gay, “Les Bijoux” / The Jewels, “Les Métamorphoses du Vampire” /The Vampire’s Metamorphosis. Discuss these six poems with other readers! Please bring your printed copy to the discussion; the group will be doing close readings and analysis of the poems.

How did Shakespeare's actors bring his plays to life without directors, lighting designers, or weeks of rehearsal? In this session, attendees will explore Shakespeare's original practices--from cue scripts and costumes to fast-paced rehearsal processes and shared light with the audience--and how these practices gave performances immediacy, spontaneity, and deep connection. Yes - there will be wine, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages! Led by: Sid Ray, PhD, Professor of English and Women's and Gender Studies, Pace University Dr. Ray's research focuses on Shakespeare and early modern drama, dramaturgy, and performance. Lecture | Expert Discusses Martin Luther & the German Language
Germans like to think of Martin Luther as the creator of the German language, supplying every possible excuse for his vitriol, including his inflammatory rhetorical attacks on marginalized groups. This talk undertakes a speculative wager: what if Germans identify with Luther and his language, up to the present day, not in spite of but because of Luther’s legendary verbal aggressivity? What can Luther teach us about the community-founding power of hate? The talk will close by turning to the only, highly ambiguous mention of Luther in Arendt’s Origins of Totalitarianism, which strikes a sharp contrast with Luther’s infelicitous preterition, sending us on a vertigo-inducing philological chase. Barbara Nagel is Associate Professor of German at Princeton; she is the author of Der Skandal des Literalen and Ambiguous Aggression in German Realism and Beyond and recipient of a Humboldt Fellowship and the Berlin Prize.

Grim Delivery, Kuppy Grim Delivery is a supernatural comedy about Riley, a boy who dies at a young age and has to navigate the afterlife without any friends or family. He gets an entry-level job as a Grim Reaper, where he discovers the horrors of mortality and, worse, the service industry! Frog Seeking Frog, Mart Smooth Frog Seeking Frog is an animated short based on the real experiences of Mart Smooth’s time living in Japan. Talk | The Revolution to Come: French Scholar Discusses Intellectual History of Revolutions from Ancient Greece to Leninist Russia
Professor of French at Stanford University and author Dan Edelstein, in conversation with Professor of French at Columbia and author Joanna Stalnaker and Assistant Professor of Political Science at Columbia Daniel Luban. Political thinkers from Plato to John Adams saw revolutions as a grave threat to society and advocated for a constitution that prevented them by balancing social interests and forms of government. The Revolution to Come traces how evolving conceptions of history ushered in a faith in the power of revolution to create more just and reasonable societies. A panoramic work of intellectual history, The Revolution to Come challenges us to reflect on the aims and consequences of revolution and to balance the value of stability over the hope for change in our own moment of fear and upheaval. Taking readers from Greek antiquity to Leninist Russia, Dan Edelstein describes how classical philosophers viewed history as chaotic and directionless, and sought to keep historical change--especially revolutions--at bay. This conception prevailed until the eighteenth century, when Enlightenment thinkers conceived of history as a form of progress and of revolution as its catalyst. These ideas were put to the test during the French Revolution and came to define revolutions well into the twentieth century. Edelstein demonstrates how the coming of the revolution leaves societies divided over its goals, giving rise to new forms of violence in which rivals are targeted as counterrevolutionaries.

While retired Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman has gained wide notoriety for exposing President Trump’s misconduct and for testimony in Congress that resulted in the president’s first impeachment, Vindman is regarded professionally as a leading policymaker and the preeminent national security strategist on Russia and Ukraine. His latest work, The Folly of Realism: How the West Deceived Itself About Russia and Betrayed Ukraine, is informed by decades of service in U.S. Embassies in Ukraine and Russia, on the White House’s National Security Council, and at the Pentagon, where he authored the Russia strategy, as well as by his dedication to navigating the most pressing global challenges. Timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, The Folly of Realism explores the successes and failures of American foreign policy in the region: an unsparing critique of where U.S. policymakers went wrong and, most importantly, lessons to be learned to avoid further catastrophe around the world.

Legendary poet, activist, oral historian, feminist, and translator Margaret Randall performs a reading and partakes in conversation with Judah Rubin based on her newest books Letters from the Edge and More Letters from the Edge, which chronicle her correspondences with fellow "outrider" artists, writers, and activists who risk everything to confront censorship, injustice, and the constraints of convention. Randall will be joined in conversation with poet, translator, and scholar Judah Rubin. The reading and conversation will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Books will be available at the event.

A celebration of the culminating book in Mike Wallace's Gotham series and of his contributions to understanding NYC's history. The new and last book in the Gotham series by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Mike Wallace, Gotham at War: A History of New York City from 1933 to 1945, is an unforgettable portrait of the city during the World War II era. Wallace shows a city wrestling with itself, as home-grown fascists clashed with immigrant workers, skyscrapers rose, and isolationism gave way to collective support of the Allied effort. Upon the release of the third and final Gotham volume, a panel pays tribute to this monumental achievement and the career of Wallace, distinguished professor emeritus of history at John Jay College and the CUNY Graduate Center and founder of the Gotham Center for New York City History at the CUNY Graduate Center. Peter Aigner, director of the Gotham Center, moderates a discussion with Victoria de Grazia, who is Moore Collegiate Professor Emerita of History at Columbia University, and Kim Phillips-Fein, who is Robert Gardiner-Kenneth T. Jackson Professor of History at Columbia University.

Join Art Historian and Associate Professor of Art at Emory University, Lisa Lee, in an analysis and discussion of artist Thomas Hrschhorn's work. Thomas Hirschhorn is a Swiss-born artist who was initially trained in graphic design and later moved to contemporary art. He was influenced by political thinkers and philosophers, such as Bataille and Spinoza, as well as earlier artists like Andy Warhol. Hirschhorn's work focuses on everyday topics and "precarious" materials, including plastic, sheeting, foil, and cardboard. His installations have been described as immersive, chaotic, and sprawling.

Conformal maps offer an elegant solution -- they preserve shape locally, so that, when you zoom in far enough, features on the map appear just as they do in reality. Developed by mathematicians in the nineteenth century, the notion of conformality has turned out to be far more than a cartographic curiosity; it helps us understand beautiful artwork and has found surprising scientific applications ranging from the study of electricity to the design of airplane wings. Artist Zoe Leonard works with photography, sculpture, and site-specific installation. Leonard reframes the act of looking itself as a complex and consequential process and questions how photography shapes our perceptions. Taking a conceptual approach and engaging with materiality and formal composition, Leonard works across a range of themes such as gender and sexuality, loss and mourning, migration, and displacement. Her work invites us to contemplate the ways photography can be used to construct both public and private narratives and histories. In recent years, her work has focused on photography’s roles in claiming territory and building nationalist narratives about land, possession, identity, and belonging. To quote the artist; “I am considering how photography can chart a new path of counter-narratives and liberatory gestures of un-building, re-thinking, and re-making how we see and engage with land, history, and each other.”
