In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend ... more >> in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place at 10am and 11am.

In her new book, Moyo argues that demographics, inequality, commodity scarcity, and technological innovation are driving social and economic unrest. The solution: a fundamental retooling of democratic capitalism. Fragile economies result in a fragile international community; that can lead, says Moyo, to a fragmented and unstable global future. Pianist Aaron Wunsch has performed in Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Halls at Lincoln Center, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall in London, at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland and many more. About the Program Leonard Bernstein's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, written during 1941-42 and published in 1942, was Bernstein's first published piece. It is dedicated to clarinetist David Oppenheim, whom Bernstein met while studying at Tanglewood during the summers of 1940 and 1941. Derek Bermel is a clarinetist and composer of “staggering eclecticism” (Gramophone Magazine). His works incorporate a wondrous array of the world’s sounds from West African rhythms, to Eastern European folk music, to Celtic strains, to jazz and the blues. According to Washington Post, “Derek Bermel’s A Short History of the Universe proved to be a surprisingly playful work. All that freewheeling postmodernism made for an engaging, extremely enjoyable listen — an intriguing new work from a very 21st-century composer.” Inspired by a rereading of Ralph Ellison’s novel, The Invisible Man (1952), Intonations evokes the atmosphere of the jazz, blues and film scoring touches of the 1940s and ’50s, all refracted through Bermel’s own 21st-century sensibility.
