In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend ... more >> in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place at 10am and 11am.

This is a mini-festival that aims to analyze and track the dynamics of oppression, discrimination, and abuse as portrayed by three significant playwrights from the U.S., England, and Egypt, in the second half of the 20th century. All readings will be followed by a talk. 5:30pm Amiri Baraka’s Dutchman (1964) A powerful one-act drama, Dutchman is set on a New York subway train, the play is a searing two-character confrontation that begins playfully, but builds rapidly in suspense and symbolic resonance. 6:30pm Harold Pinter’s One for the Road (1984) Considered by Frank Rich as Pinter’s “statement about the human rights abuses of totalitarian governments”. The play is set in a room, during the course of one day, where family of three–a father, mother, and a child–are interrogated and tortured. 7:30pm Salah Abdul-Saboor’s Night Traveller (1969) A black comedy set in a train heading to an unknown destination with three main characters: Narrator, Passenger, and Conductor. Throughout this absurdist narrative, the Conductor manipulates the Passenger’s identity by playing mind games and exerting oppressive practices.

Thomas Osorio will provide an overview of how the judiciary has treated conflict-related sexual violence against women and men, based his wide expertise in the field. Heleen Touquet will critically examine the silence on male victims in the country in the current day, paying particular attention to service provision, court cases and publications on conflict-related sexual violence, noting that their absence in the public debate is linked to prevailing gender norms and masculinities. She will also discuss two recent documentaries in which male survivors have been given a voice and look at how conflict-related sexual violence is framed in these films.
