Symposium | Latin America-United States Dialogue of Knowledge


This two-day symposium proposes a space to discuss and create forms of articulations between Latin America and the United States. Researchers and research groups from Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States and Canada will gather to share their projects and perspectives into building a new agenda. Classical Music | Bach at Noon


The organ works of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) offered in 30-minute meditations. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term ‘baroque’ has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was ‘maestro di capella’ at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today’s music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi’s advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 11, 2018 to May 22, 2019.

During these limited hours, visitors can explore the normally closed sanctuary at their own pace along the rustic trail. See how the conservancy has restored this native woodland garden for birds and other wildlife. The wood-chipped trail is uneven; please wear appropriate shoes. This ecosystem is a protected area and home to many flora and fauna. No groups, dogs, bikes, or strollers. Free and self-guided. Space is limited.

Tour | Harlem Tour and Evening Gospel Church Service


Harlem has been the heart of several music revolutions. From jazz to blues to Broadway, Harlem has seen some of the most prolific artists of the 20th Century. Join this two-hour tour of South Harlem and learn about its musical history. They’ll talk about black spirituals, jazz music, R+B, Yiddish singers, Tin Pan Alley writers, minstrel shows, contemporary gospel music, and more. They’ll also discuss how music influences religion and vice versa while visiting the outside of several Harlem churches and mosques. They’ll end the tour around 6:45 pm outside a gospel church. From there, you can enjoy an intimate gospel service featuring a 10-piece band and solo singers—or hop on the nearby subway to your next destination. Following the musical performance, you’ll experience a gospel sermon. The sermon and musical portion take place in an actual Harlem church, so you’ll never experience the same service twice.

Talk | The Culinary Mystery of Hinde Amchanitzky


New York Times food critic and cookbook author Melissa Clark helps us untangle a century-old gastronomic mystery. In 1901, an enterprising Lower East Side restaurant keeper named Hinde Amchanitzky published America’s first Yiddish language cookbook. Mysteriously, eight years after Hinde’s death, a “new and augmented edition” of her cookbook, a departure from the original in both tone and content, appeared in neighborhood bookstores. From schmaltz-laden noodle puddings and stuffed breast of veal to “hygienic” bread and celery cutlets, the two cookbooks could hardly be written by the same woman. Or were they? Jane Ziegelman, author of 97 Orchard, and Annie Polland present the culinary clues--translations of the recipes, newspaper ads, and food samples from the cookbooks as we try to solve the mystery, and at the very least, learn more about immigrant women and cooking.

In 1983 Mary Ellen Mark began photographing a group of fiercely independent homeless and troubled youth who were making their way on the streets of Seattle as pimps, prostitutes, panhandlers, and smalltime drug dealers. Initially published in July of that same year in Life magazine, this work culminated in the 1988 publication Streetwise, and the 1984 documentary film of the same name by Mark’s husband, filmmaker Martin Bell.
