Tour | Synagogue Tour: Eldridge Street Synagogue/Museum at Eldridge Street


Guided tours at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. Tours are one hour long, and focus on the building’s history, architecture and spiritual use. The Eldridge Street Synagogue is the first great house of worship built in America by Jewish immigrants. Constructed in 1887 during a period of mass Eastern European Jewish migration to the Lower East Side, it now stands in a vibrant Chinatown.

Shearith Israel/Chatham Square Cemetery is the oldest Jewish congregation in North America and traces itself back to 23 Jews, largely Spanish and Portuguese, from Recife, Brazil. Several of the earliest congregation members, including the first American-born Jewish clergyman and members who fought in the Revolutionary War, are buried in the cemetery overlooking the Lower East Side’s Chatham Square.

Tour | Special Tour: Church of the Covenant


The Church of the Covenant began in 1866 as a Presbyterian mission Sunday school in a space above a stable on East 40th Street. It was initiated by a group of young professionals headed by J. Cleveland Cady, a young New York architect who became perhaps best known for the original Metropolitan Opera House (1891) and the Museum of Natural History (1890). As the mission outgrew its rented quarters, Cady was awarded the commission to design the present church. Cady designed both the Victorian Gothic country chapel and an adjoining Parish House, as well as interior furnishings, which opened in 1871. The original Parish House was replaced in 1927 with half-timbered Elizabethan style, designed to blend with the neighboring Tudor City. In 1950, 42nd Street was lowered by several feet, necessitating the addition of a granite and limestone base below the entry level of the building. Space for this tour is limited to 25 people.

A Gothic-style church with an almost “fairy tale” church tower and a church house by James Gamble Rogers. The present sanctuary, built in 1899, was designed by James E. Ware and Son. Tour and organ demonstration by Dr. Andrew E. Henderson, Director of Music and church organist since 2005. Space is limited.

Tour | Church Tour: St. James’ Episcopal Church


St. James’ Church is a large parish church. The Church was built in 1884 and designed by well-known church architect, Robert H. Robertson. In the 1920’s the church hired Ralph Adams Cram, the foremost ecclesial architect of his time, to move the main entrance from 71st Street to Madison Avenue. In so doing he completely redesigned the interior, raising the side walls and constructing a new wooden, decoratively painted ceiling.

Tour | Synagogue Tour: Hebrew Tabernacle Congregation


Constructed in 1931-1932 as the Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist. Designed by the firm of Cherry and Matz, the building is three stories with massing defined by a series of setbacks, typical of the Art Deco style. Sited on a prominent hilltop corner site in Washington Heights, the building features a tripartite main entrance with deeply recessed, large bronze double doors. The Hebrew Tabernacle Reform synagogue congregation was founded in Harlem in 1906, and worshiped at two prior locations before purchasing this building in 1973. The building is unusual as one of the few Art Deco houses of worship in New York City, blending neo-classical form and Art Deco ornament in a variety of materials (limestone, cast iron, cast aluminum, oak).

Tour | Church Tour: Marble Collegiate Church


Marble Collegiate Church traces its history back to the city's first church, a Reformed congregation established by Dutch colonists in 1628. Completed in 1854 to the design of Samuel A. Warner, the Early Romanesque Revival building is clad entirely in Tuckahoe marble and has Gothic trim and a Wren-like steeple. The church has had a number of famous preachers, most prominent among them the Reverend Norman Vincent Peale. Space is limited.

Tour | Synagogue Tour: The Actors’ Temple


Congregation Ezrath Israel (Actors’ Temple) was designed by Sidney F. Oppenhiemer and built in 1922 within the walls of a brick tenement built before 1885. The shul occupies the entire 25 foot wide building lot. Little remains of the pre-existing tenement except the foundation, some floor framing and portions of the brick rear and side walls.

Classical Music | Gershwin: Double Life of an American Icon


A retrospective that delves into the fascinating life and music career of one of America’s most original and celebrated figures. From his youth George Gershwin started out as a song-plugger on Tin Pan Alley, but as he was continuing to gain more success writing popular music for the stage and later Hollywood, he began to lead a double life striving to also make his mark as a serious composer. Yamaha Piano Artist Alexander Wu performs, along with commentary, and brings to life a unique collection of the composer’s earlier piano pieces to his Broadway songs and serious works that include Rhapsody in Blue.
