Workshop | Handsewing 101
Participate in a class on learning to sew by hand using traditional handsewing techniques. For most of human history people have created stuff from fabric and fibers by hand. Almost everything we can sew using a machine can be done by hand. It just takes a little more mindfulness, patience, time, and a few simple tools and techniques to begin. Participants will learn about the tools needed for handsewing, the various types of stitches used in hand sewing, the terminology, basic fabric information, and more. You will also get an opportunity to practice what you have learned in the class by sewing a small project that can be completed during our sessions. No prior experience necessary. No need to purchase anything. All materials will be provided for the class. Just come in and start your journey to becoming a sewists. Handsewing, sometimes called slow stitching, can be a mindful hobby that allows you to slowly create beautiful and quality items in our fast paced world.

Explore Wrought, an exhibition by Abigail Lucien, the artist’s first solo presentation with the gallery. The exhibition features a constellation of recent and new sculptures that capture the evolution of Lucien’s practice over the last few years and is grounded in a poetic meditation on memory and placemaking through an architectural vernacular. A workable mineral born from the explosion of stars, iron forms the molten core of our planet and is also essential to human life, coursing through our blood. Crucial to Lucien’s work is the idea that iron retains memory. Low iron levels in blood can lead to forgetfulness —without it we forget. Lucien nurtures a commemorative practice through metal by transforming iron and steel, an alloy of iron and carbon, into conduits through which to channel past lives, knowledge systems, and traditions of craft that span across vast temporalities and geographies.

Explore an exhibition of photographs by Emmet Gowin, most of which have never before been seen. The presentation of works from Gowin’s Baldwin Street: Photographs 1966–1994 series will coincide with the release of a new book on the same subject from Princeton University Press, available for purchase onsite during the show. The exhibition will spotlight a selection from Baldwin Street: Photographs 1966–1994, a body of intimate portraits by Gowin of his wife Edith Morris and her extended family taken in Danville, Virginia. Named after the dead-end street where many of Edith’s family members—including her mother, Reva Booher Morris—lived, the series bears witness to the lives and relationships that shaped this family over time and sheds light on Gowin’s artistic development across his career, which spans more than six decades.

Experience the exhibition Chuck Close: On Paper, which includes Close's heroic large-scale watercolors, polaroids, drawings, maquettes, and prints. This presentation--several years in the making--highlights the many ways in which paper became a primary and influential material in image-making over the course of his career. Since the 1970s, Close has been known for his innovative approach to conceptual portraiture, systematically transposing his subjects' likenesses from photographs onto gridded paintings and drawings. Over the course of five decades, his work has challenged conventional modes of representation. The artist posed radical propositions with his work, going against the grain of art world trends during the late 1960s and 1970s, when Minimalism, Pop art, and abstraction were dominant, and portraiture and photorealism were largely considered taboo.

Opening Reception | Stitched: Sam Gilliam's Innovative 3D Wall Works & Hanging Sculptures
Explore the stitched works of Sam Gilliam, which stem from innovation. In 1933, Gilliam was accepted as the artist in residence at Ballinglen Arts Foundation in the rural north of Ireland, but his paints were barred from shipment. So Gilliam found himself in a dire circumstance and he decided to paint and stain a large group of monumental loose canvases, folded them up, and shipped them to Ballinglen. These canvases became the source material for a new body of work he would produce in Ireland--for a painting residency during which he did no actual painting. Once on site, Gilliam hired a local seamstress and worked alongside her every day, cutting and stitching the pre-painted canvases to construct brand new paintings from the found material of his own creation. The results were dynamic three-dimensional wall works and hanging sculptures, vibrant compositions of colliding and coalescing geometries and colors which defy easy categorization as painting or sculpture. Gilliam's stitched works are perhaps best understood as Constructivist objects, which reflect his tireless spirit of invention, much like the circumstances of their own creation. Three decades later, many of these works were shown for the first time in Sam Gilliam: Sewing Fields at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Dublin in 2025.

This event showcases three scholar-artists’ aesthetic practice grounded in refusal: Pedro Lopez, Sahar Khraibani, and Hamed Sinno. Each engages deeply with forms of aesthetic making—in public space, against the white cube gallery, through DIY practices, and adhering to copyleft—as practices of refusal of colonial, cisheteronormative logics and of nominal inclusion into violent institutions. Enjoy a celebratory evening to launch artist Renee Green's new essay collection, The Equator Has Moved. A conversation between Green, Alexander Alberro, and James Meyer is moderated by Jordan Carter, Dia curator and co-department head. This first comprehensive U.S. monograph on Green's work provides a foundational introduction to the artist's practice and addresses critical gaps in existing scholarship. In her uniquely recursive process, Green juxtaposes a range of materials--archival, documentary and literary fragments, personal and found ephemera, speculative narratives, and her own extant work--to probe the unstable boundaries between fact and fiction, public recollection and personal memory. The book's essays situate Green's practice within key historical influences and periods, including lineages of Conceptual art, Minimalism, and institutional critique, examining Green's ongoing contributions to artistic milieus and discourses while addressing her rigorous formal and conceptual approaches.

Moving through early 20th-century Prague (its cafes, theaters, galleries, cinemas, and evolving urban landscape), Kafka cultivated distinct ways of seeing that shaped both his literary work and the drawings he created throughout his life, many of which have only recently been rediscovered. Through images and discussion, the speakers will examine what drew Kafka's attention, how he observed people, places, and objects, and how these visual practices resonate across his diaries, drawings, and writings. The conversation offers new perspectives on the relationship between image and language in Kafka's work and situates his visual imagination within the cultural and artistic contexts of Central European modernism.
