You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. Musil, a well-known theologian and explorer, was known as "Sheikh Mousa" among Bedouin tribes and spoke 35 Arabic dialects, giving him unmatched access to the peoples and sites of the Levant. Marshall D. Shulman Professor of Post-Soviet Foreign Policy at Columbia University Tim Frye’s talk, based on his new book Workplace Politics, uncovers how state-dependent bosses mobilize workers at the ballot box—and why this hidden tactic flourishes in opaque autocracies. In many countries, politicians rely on employers to influence the voting behavior of their workers, but we know little about this tactic. Workplace Politics draws on surveys of firm managers and employees in eight countries, as well as a wealth of fine-grained data from Russia, to show that firm managers who depend on the state, cannot easily move their assets, or can easily replace workers are especially likely to mobilize their workers during elections.

Experience a book talk by journalist Roman Badanin, The Tsar In Propria Persona: How Vladimir Putin Deceived Us All, moderated by Elise Giuliano. The Tsar In Propria Persona is the product of Roman Badanin and Mikhail Rubin's reporting at investigative media outlet Proekt, which, since its launch in 2018, has repeatedly exposed the commercial and personal relationships that underpin the Putin regime. In their book, Badanin and Rubin manage to penetrate Putin's inner circle of friends and family in their forensic account of the former KGB agent's rise to power, violating a decades-long Kremlin-imposed taboo on any mention of the Russian leader's private life.

Lecture | Explore the Ancient Greek City, Lyktos


The lecture offers insight on the wide-ranging archaeological discoveries made by an archaeological team to shed light on Lyktos for roughly a millennium, i.e. from its probable foundation ca. 1000 BCE, to the monumentalization of part of its acropolis ca. 100 CE. Emphasis is placed on the rich finds from settlement and burial areas of the 7th to 5th centuries BCE, which generate exceptional insights into the archaeology and history of a Greek community of the period, and raise important methodological issues over the archaeological visibility of an alleged Dark Age. Since 2021, a team has been involved in archaeological fieldwork at the Greek and Roman city Lyktos in central Crete, Greece. Celebrated by Homer, considered as the birthplace of god Zeus by Hesiod, and identified as the cradle of the Spartan constitution by Aristotle, Lyktos boasts an unusually rich literary and epigraphic record.

Arts and music writer Andy Beta launches his debut book, Cosmic Music: The Life, Art, and Transcendence of Alice Coltrane, the first full biography of this remarkable, groundbreaking artist, and is an elegant, deeply researched corrective to the historical—and critical—record. It elevates Alice Coltrane to her proper place, both alongside her husband as one of the greatest musical visionaries of the 20th century, and also as a singular artist in Western music, one who became a spiritual leader in her lifetime. Alice Coltrane (1937-2007) was one of the most misunderstood artists of the last sixty years. For most of her life—and even in the decades since her passing—she was primarily known as the widow of the late John Coltrane. John Coltrane is widely seen as being one of the greatest tenor saxophonists and composers of the 20th century, with a fervor and devotion approaching sainthood. Yet ever so slowly, that level of love and appreciation is also being bestowed upon pianist, organist, harpist, and composer Alice Coltrane.

Classical Music | Diverse Ensemble Works by Women Composers (In Person AND Online!)


UNBOUND: Music by Women Composers Since the Age of Enlightenment, performed by New York-based trio Zephyra, is a program of works for flute, voice, and piano by women composers, several of whom faced significant barriers in having their compositions performed and being recognized as serious composers. This was especially so with those women composers active during or shortly after the Age of Enlightenment. During this period and into the 19th and early 20th centuries, societal norms and institutional restrictions often limited women's access to formal musical training, performance opportunities, and publication of their works. The program includes works by Anna Bon di Venezia, Isabella Colbran, Pauline Viardot, Cecile Chaminade, Marion Bauer, Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, and Margarita Zelenaia. Zephyra is comprised of mezzo-soprano Anna Tonna, flautist Laura Falzon, and pianist Olga Gurevich. The trio is dedicated to presenting thematic and adventurous programming exploring repertoire from historical as well as contemporary composers, drawing from Western and non-Western traditions alike.

The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality hosts a book launch and discussion of #MeToo and the Politics of Transnational Feminism, with editors Chaitanya Lakkimsetti and Vanita Reddy.  This anthology frames #MeToo as a movement with uneven itineraries, goals, and outcomes. The essays in this volume take a transnational and comparative feminist approach to #MeToo, focusing on the multiple ways that feminist voices from Argentina, Egypt, India, Pakistan, South Korea, the US, and the UK have pushed the boundaries of what counts as politics, justice, solidarity, violence, precarity, and vulnerability. In doing so, this volume shows how an engagement with #MeToo allows us to extend and sharpen the empirical, theoretical, and methodological parameters of transnational feminist thought. A blend of global activist and academic work, #MeToo and the Politics of Transnational Feminism offers a necessary transnational framing of the #MeToo movement.

The word comes from the combination of the Japanese verb oru (to fold) and the noun kami (paper). DuBois, in conversation with legal scholar Julie Suk, discusses the reformer whose words still provoke—and whose struggles helped shape contemporary feminism. In Elizabeth Cady Stanton: A Revolutionary Life, historian Ellen Carol DuBois presents a definitive portrait of one of the most influential figures in the American struggles for women’s suffrage and rights. From the 1840s until her death in 1902, Stanton fought for women’s emancipation, advocating on issues that went far beyond the vote. Drawing on archival research and Stanton’s writings, DuBois traces her advocacy for reproductive rights, marriage reform, and challenges to religious hierarchies, while also examining Stanton’s conflicts with Black reformers and her support of nativist ideas—highlighting the contradictions that continue to complicate her legacy.
