Concert | Afro-Puerto Rican Music with BombaWorks AYA


AYA means "fern" it is a symbol used by the Adrinka people of West Africa a symbol of endurance and resourcefulness growing in difficult and harsh places. AYA chose this symbol because it tells something about our ancestors, those that survived The Voyage and made it to Puerto Rico. It tells of the endurance to continue practicing something that was frowned upon, banned and that could get them killed; and of course the resourcefulness in which we could only imagine many used in order to hold these Bombas (gatherings where Bomba music was played) in those colonial times. Workshop | Step Workshop


For the second year, step teams from around New York City will perform throughout the week of June 13 - 16. This week-long celebration will culminate in a showcase and stepping workshop on Saturday, June 16. All ages and experience levels are welcome to learn stepping basics with Stomp the Yard star and stepping expert Seye Charles. Stepping is an energetic and precise form of group movement that uses a mixture of spoken word, footsteps, and handclaps to transform the participants’ bodies into rhythmic instruments. The Comedy of Errors tells the story of two sets of identical twins that were accidentally separated at birth. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant, Dromio of Syracuse, arrive in Ephesus, which turns out to be the home of their twin brothers, Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant, Dromio of Ephesus. When the Syracusans encounter the friends and families of their twins, a series of wild mishaps based on mistaken identities lead to wrongful beatings, a near-seduction, the arrest of Antipholus of Ephesus, and accusations of infidelity, theft, madness, and demonic possession. Concert | Choirs from Argentina, Manhattan and Hoboken Unite in a Festival of Women's Voices


They don’t speak the same language, they don’t live the same culture, and their lives are a hemisphere apart — but Cantigas Women’s Choir of Hoboken, N.J. (pictured), and School Mothers Choir of New York City are hosting Coral Femenino de Caballito women’s choir from Buenos Aires, Argentina, in their North American debut concert. The three choirs will individually perform an international repertoire celebrating the power of women’s voices, with music from Greece, Scotland, India, Iraq, Syria, and Argentina. The highlight of the concert will feature all three groups combining forces for Rollo Dilworth’s “Dream Keeper,” Eric Whitacre’s “Five Hebrew Love Songs,” and selections from Leonardo San Juan’s Magnificat, directed by San Juan himself.

Concert | Rock & Roll: Dawes / Kurt Vile and the Violators


A self-described “American rock ‘n’ roll band,” Dawes (pictured) represent everything pure and true about that genre, four talented friends making music together, fueled by a shared belief in the power of their songs. With Nothing Is Wrong, the Los Angeles-based band continues to master their blend of singer/songwriter reflection with folk, country and AOR-inspired arrangements, all ringing guitars, soaring harmonies and heartfelt melodies. Kurt Vile and the Violators have a way of tying time in knots. You can hear it on their newest album, Smoke Ring for My Halo, where the pinwheeling guitars and reaching Ring atmospheres of the single, “Baby’s Arms” are as strange as they are familiar: a demonstration of how Vile can put worn methods and sounds through himself and end up with something that isn’t emotionally or sonically obvious.
